Sometimes, a second chance begins with someone noticing that something isn&rsquo;t right. By the time Vito arrived at PMHS-CV, our staff and volunteers had already endured several extraordinarily difficult days. It began with an emergency call from a town we serve: more than 20 cats needed to be removed from a devastating situation. Nearly half were kittens from several different litters, and their health had already been severely compromised. Every cat was infested with fleas. For the smallest kittens, the infestation was life-threatening. Several had already died after losing too much blood before help could reach them. Our team knew we had to act immediately. We rushed the cats to the shelter, but one kitten passed away as our Medical Manager carried them inside. Another fought for two days before also succumbing to the effects of the infestation. A third kitten tested positive for both parvovirus and FIP, leaving us deeply concerned that we were facing another heartbreaking outcome. Medication used to treat FIP is difficult to obtain, but despite the uncertainty, we placed an order immediately. Our Medical Manager took the kitten home to foster, determined to give the little one every possible chance. Sadly, the kitten continued to decline. When it became clear that recovery was no longer possible, we made the painful decision to say goodbye and prevent any further suffering. During this same period, an older cat in our care began showing signs of poor health. With medical treatment, a nutritious diet and plenty of love, she initially blossomed - quickly becoming a favorite among staff and volunteers. Then her condition suddenly worsened. Bloodwork revealed that she had cancer, and once again, our team had to make the compassionate but devastating decision to let an animal go peacefully. These losses were only part of what our staff and volunteers were carrying while continuing to meet the daily needs of every animal at the shelter. Then Vito arrived. Three-year-old Vito came to PMHS-CV on September 3 with another cat after housing issues forced their family to surrender them. Both appeared healthy, but while his companion was social and quickly found a home, Vito remained frightened and withdrawn. Our staff and volunteers gave him patience, comfort and attention. Then someone noticed that something wasn&rsquo;t right. Vito had stopped eating. He was lying in his litter box and had become even more withdrawn. Our medical team examined him immediately, and when he began vomiting and became lethargic, with a low body temperature and a painful abdomen, we rushed him to the emergency veterinarian. Vito had a life-threatening urinary blockage. His kidneys were shutting down, his potassium had reached a dangerously high level and his heart rate was alarmingly low. Without immediate treatment, he would die. After all the heartbreak of the previous weeks, we desperately hoped we could save him. Vito needed a fighting chance, and our staff and volunteers needed a win. The veterinary team worked urgently to stabilize him and relieve the blockage. Even then, we didn&rsquo;t know whether his kidneys would recover. But as long as there was hope, we were determined to keep fighting for him. Over the next several days, Vito received IV fluids, treatment and constant monitoring. Slowly, he began to eat. His spirits lifted. By Monday, his bloodwork had returned to normal. Vito had made it. Today, he is back at the shelter, eating well and feeling less stressed. Soon, he will enter a foster home where he can continue healing, rebuild his confidence and prepare for the loving home he deserves. There are struggles every day in animal shelters. Our staff and volunteers witness fear, illness and loss and then find the strength to walk into the next room and offer comfort to another animal who needs them. We cannot always control the outcome. But we can promise that every animal will be seen, every possible option will be considered, and no life will be treated as though it does not matter. Vito&rsquo;s emergency care came at a significant cost, but we never want finances to determine whether an animal receives the treatment needed to survive.
