In order to stay in Alaska, she will need to obtain an EB-3 visa (with cooperation from the Anchorage School District), or an EB-2 visa with a National Interest Waiver (NIW). This has been an ongoing issue with the Anchorage School District, and after meeting with a private immigration attorney, she will potentially be faced with at least $15,000 in legal expenses to try and gain citizenship. This does not include the visas for her children and spouse assuming she is successful in obtaining permanent residence status (also known as a green card). As you can imagine, this would be difficult to afford on a teacher's salary, especially if she has to save money for a potential move back to Taiwan. The Mandarin Immersion program already lost two teachers two years ago due to this same issue, which is why she needs a private attorney. The program will not survive if we do not retain quality teachers, and Chen Laoshi (Mrs. Chen) is truly one of the best.
