With a long-standing history and detailed club records dating back 13 years, HLA has been able to mold itself into CCNY’s largest engineering club. The club has an established rocketry development program for both new and existing members which familiarizes members with the various aspects of rocketry and develops their rocketry-related skill sets.  The HLA recently brought back its competitive rocketry program - and we just successfully completed and launched our first group-built rocket, Daybreak, since 2017!  But Project Daybreak is just one of HLA’s four programs. The other three programs are Certification, Propulsion, and Avionics.  The extent of our four programs, and their success, progress, and development, requires sizable funding. Unfortunately, club funding has recently become an even greater challenge.  The Grove School of Engineering has entirely cut off the funding to clubs, and CCNY drastically cut its funding as well. Our programs have seen immense growth over the past year, let us tell you more about them. Project Daybreak A little bit of history first. The Project Messenger team launched their group-built high-power rocket, CX-3E Odyssey, at the 2017 Spaceport America Cup competition in New Mexico. After launching, the rocket (supposedly) reached its 10,000-foot altitude goal and then proceeded to separate in two. Only one of the halves was ever recovered. For six years, the HLA continued to gather the pieces Project Messenger left behind. The club expanded, its programs grew and developed, and countless members received high-power rocketry certifications. Finally, it was decided that 2023 would be the year high-power group builds came back. Since the beginning of the year, our Project Daybreak team has worked on manufacturing a competition-capable rocket from scratch. They spent months researching and manufacturing the rocket - and finally, the rocket was completed this October. Some of the standout features of Daybreak were its dual-backup recovery system, fiberglass airframe, fiberglass/carbon fiber layered fins, and of course, its amazing paint job.  Daybreak was successfully launched and recovered this November. The Certification program is designed to get anyone into the world of hobby rocketry, regardless of technical experience.  In this program, the HLA teaches students about the basics of rocketry and assists them in building their low-power and high-power rockets from scratch. On their journey to launch their rocket, students learn the fundamentals of rocket design, how to simulate a rocket flight, and gain hands-on experience with manufacturing and assembling both low and high-power rockets.  <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1700870548/cjwax7ak7dpe2b5m2afd.jpg" style="width:600px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;-webkit-user-select:none;max-width:100%" /> This process culminates in members attempting to obtain their Level 1 certification from the Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) or the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) upon the successful flight of their rocket. The Certification Program is our primary entry-level program, and a stepping stone for obtaining Level 2 certifications, working in our Propulsion and Avionics programs, and working on more complex, team-based, high-power rockets, such as Daybreak. Thus far, 23 members have certified through the HLA. Those certifications include three Level 2 certifications! This year, we have 35 new members in our Certification program. They’re currently working on their low-power rocket builds. Propulsion The goal of HLA's Propulsion program is to give our club experience in understanding propulsion engineering and the technical ability to manufacture, test, and analyze rocket motors for use in our rockets. Under the guidance of a knowledgeable mentor, the HLA has been educating itself in the science and art of potassium nitrate-sorbitol ("sugar") solid rocket motor manufacturing and testing.  <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1700870289/yxszvvy9v7fi1lb5tspn.jpg" style="width:524px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;-webkit-user-select:none;max-width:100%" /> Unlike our Certification Program, which benefits from the TRA &amp; NAR certification system, there is no such widely accepted training and education program for any kind of propulsion engineering. As such, the HLA is not only working on learning the methods of solid rocket motor manufacturing but also on establishing a safe, rigorous and holistic research program. Our Propulsion team recently conducted their first successful motor grain chemistry test. The team is now working on constructing a data acquisition motor test-stand, to use in further motor burn tests. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1700865097/mzliljrn3lb1wwz44pt0.gif" style="width:600px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;-webkit-user-select:none;max-width:100%" />Motor grain-chemistry test, in the cellar of CCNY. Avionics HLA’s Avionics Program aims to build a flight computer that collects flight data and triggers electronic deployment events (such as for parachutes). In this team-based project, our members research and integrate various types of Arduino-compatible sensors which determine and transmit the rocket's altitude, orientation, acceleration, and position. Based in this data, the flight computer triggers deployment events which allow the rocket to land safely. This project is electromechanically oriented, giving members exposure to Arduino programming, data analysis, electronics mounting, soldering, circuit board design, and more. Over the past year, we have been able to develop our Catalyst series of flight computers, which have successfully collected data on multiple rocket flights. We are continuously improving our computer to be more accurate and to be able to deploy parachutes.  <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1700866079/t5oscr33np1k84u4sukb.webp" style="width:375px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;-webkit-user-select:none;max-width:100%" />HLA's Catalyst flight computer. <hr /> Our Finances The HLA has made great strides over the last year towards securing external sponsorships, and we are currently in the process of scaling our sponsorship efforts. But, the HLA is still in need of your support!  With the addition of the group-build to the list of HLA’s programs and the club’s renewed competitive rocketry efforts, the HLA requires more resources and funding than ever before. As an example, the material cost just for Daybreak was $2,200!
