Coyotl + Macehualli is opening a community space in Spring 2025 located in the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of El Sereno (Ochuunga) at 3347 N Eastern Ave. This will be a space for collective learning and community activation, and due to the recent fires in Los Angeles and federal funding cuts, we are in URGENT need of monetary support for operations and building out our tool, literature and seed library. BOOKSThe lending library will contain BIPOC-centered literature on Traditional Ecological Knowledge, soil remediation, wildfire safety & preparedness, reciprocal land tending, environmental justice, history of land use, social justice, and more including periodicals, reference books, field guides, poetry and fiction and non-fiction works in various languages. We will also be hosting events later this year featuring discussions with local authors of some of the books in the library! We plan to offer a range of seeds focused on native plants and regenerative agriculture. WORKSHOPSWorkshops on wildfire safety, home hardening, building homes using natural fire resilient materials, propagating native plants, plant identification, plant medicine, natural dyes, natural textiles, Native foodways and more will be provided free of charge. At all of our events, we aim to have interpretation, childcare, accessibility, and food all free for the community. Being with nature and knowing that we are part of nature has profound benefits for our mental well being. We've had folks tell us that coming out to some of our events has changed their life. Our Community Lending Library project centers imagination and provides physical tools, place & belonging, inspiration and discussion to tackle the environmental and social justice issues our community is actively being threatened by in Los Angeles. Acting as a grassroots, radical movement within the capitalist nonprofit structure, we advocate for remediation and rematriation of the land and prioritize the immediate needs of the community that are not being met due to systemic failures. Our land defense and land stewardship work is in relationship to the land, plant and animal relatives and members of the Tongva community. Coyotl + Macehualli translates to coyote and Indigenous person in Nahuatl, emphasizing the need to work horizontally with our plant and animal relatives.
