Transplant Saved My Life. Team NC Gave Me Purpose. I became involved with North Carolina Transplant Athletes because I wanted to share the story of what a transplant can do for one&#39;s life. Transplant saved me. It gave me a future when I was running out of time. I know it can save other lives, too. I also wanted to speak directly to the African American community and encourage more open conversations about donation and transplant. Our community needs more voices, more understanding, and more hope. For me, the meaning of the gift of life is simple. If it weren&#39;t for this gift, I wouldn&#39;t be alive today. Everything I am able to experience now is possible because someone chose to give. Being part of Team NC has changed my life in ways I never expected. It gave me the chance to become active again through sports and friendly competition. It allowed me to feel the joy of being on a team again, supporting and encouraging people who understand this journey. The camaraderie and shared mission bring us together in a powerful way, reminding me why this work matters. I do not have a specific dollar goal for my campaign. My goal is to tell the truth about our need, share our message, and invite people to give from their hearts. Every gift supports our team as we travel to the Transplant Games of America and continue raising awareness for organ donation. My message is simple. Organ donation saves lives. Organ donation enhances lives. I am living proof. I know hundreds of people who are alive today because someone said yes. I plan to reach my network through social media. Before my health challenges, I spent years working on cruise ships, so many of my friends and colleagues are spread across the world. Social media is the best way to connect with them and share my story. My transplant journey began with a diagnosis I never expected. At a routine checkup in 2001, I learned I had Hepatitis C. I did not feel sick. I felt fine. I had no idea the virus had been quietly damaging my liver for years. Later, I was diagnosed with liver cancer. The cancer was cured, but that led my doctors to discuss the possibility of a liver transplant. By 2009 or 2010 the Hepatitis C began to take a toll on my body. I lost weight. My energy faded. In the months before my transplant, I was mostly confined to a bed or a lounge chair. I had very little strength to do anything. I received a liver transplant on January 30, 2015. During surgery, my kidneys shut down, and I spent the next 19 months on dialysis. Dialysis was one of the hardest periods of my life. When I later received a kidney transplant, the quality of my life improved more than I can describe. Since then, I have worked tirelessly to serve this community and give back to the people who supported me. The greatest challenge I faced was dialysis. It tested my strength and my spirit. What got me through was my determination to honor my donor and the support of my family and medical team. Team NC brings everything full circle for me. I have always been a team person. I played sports growing up and spent 10 years in the military. Teamwork has shaped my life. Being part of North Carolina Transplant Athletes brings that teamwork back in a powerful way. The unity, purpose, and shared commitment inspire me to keep moving forward in this community of donation and transplantation. Thank you for supporting our mission.
