In 2020, The WANDER School became a nonprofit with a vision of connecting historically underserved communities with herbal care during COVID. As the Black Lives Matter movement developed, our mission of Herbal Reparations solidified. In the current political and environmental climate, our work as community herbalists and caregivers is as important and needed as ever. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastation to our region, we continue to support healing by shifting our work as educators to provide direct care through free herbal first aid to WNC. We are seeing and providing support for health symptoms such as grief and trauma; respiratory conditions from mold growing in flooded homes and toxins in the mud and dust left from the storm; digestive disorders from stress and lack of access to healthy food, clean water, basic necessities. With so many homes and jobs lost and surges in health needs, the disparities and lack of access in our community is growing. We are asking for support to help us continue to provide free, high quality direct herbal aid by getting much needed supplies and care to the hardest hit, most underserved and least resourced folks in our communities.  Work we’re doing and some organizations we are currently in collaboration with: <ul><li>We have been giving away herbal remedies regularly for many months at 12 Baskets Café in West Asheville as they provide free meals and groceries 6 days a week. (<a href="https://www.counterflowasheville.com/safeshelter">https://www.counterflowasheville.com/safeshelter</a>)</li></ul> <ul><li>We are collaborating with Asheville Community Paramedics and the Asheville Mutual Aid Wellness Clinic to create collaborations and strengthen support  between local caregivers.</li></ul> <ul><li>We are preparing to launch a mobile wellness clinic to serve more remote communities, that will function out of already established clinics and utilize volunteer help from our network of local natural health practitioners.</li></ul> We need your help! We are calling in support and community connection.  As The WANDER School’s primary focus has shifted from education to direct herbal aid, we are asking for help to continue this work. We are fortunate to have been able to build our clinic offerings through donations of time, energy, supplies, remedies and community support since the end of September. To have the capacity for our collaborative to continue sustainably, we need funding and resources. We are working on long term planning and larger grant support, but are asking for our community’s help to cover immediate, urgent needs until we secure additional investors and capacity building funding. We have an immediate goal of $10,000 in donations that will be spent on stipend compensation for staff, operating expenses such as print materials, purchase of remedies from local Herbalists to restock supplies for free distribution, purchase of supplies for additional medicine making, clinic supplies, and gas for distribution vehicles.  As a 501(c)(3) we are able to provide donation receipts. The extra income will help them with business disaster recovery.  During the weeks long power outage, we lost pounds of frozen locally grown and foraged elderberries, ginger, and turmeric, that would have become elderberry syrup and fire cider, medicine for our communities. We need help to replace these and buy supplies, like glycerin, honey, vinegar, oil, and containers, to make more remedies to distribute in our new mobile clinic to serve affected people. We also need a larger, all-wheel drive vehicle to access the hardest to reach, most affected, rural areas, and be able to pick up and deliver remedy donations and supplies. Our current fundraising goal of $10,000 will be spent: -$7,200 for operating expenses and administrative fees to pay for 2 administrative  workers for a total of $2,400 per month for 3 months.-$1,500 for purchasing remedies from local Herbalists (especially BIPOC &amp; Queer Herbalists impacted by the hurricane) for the next 3 months ($500 per month).-$900 for purchasing supplies for remedy making and clinic supplies.-$400 for gas to pick up and deliver remedy donations and clinic supplies. Our longer term fundraising goal of $25,000 will be spent:-$10,000 for a down payment on a van to help us pick up and deliver more remedy donations and set up more mobile clinic locations.-$9,600 for operating expenses and administrative fees to pay for 2 administrative  workers for a total of $2,400 per month for 4 months.-$2,400 for purchasing remedies from local Herbalists (especially BIPOC &amp; Queer Herbalists impacted by the hurricane) for the next 4 months ($600 per month).-$1000 for purchasing supplies for remedy making and clinic supplies.-$1200 for purchasing herbs (to replace losses) from local (especially BIPOC and Queer) farmers.-$800 for gas to pick up and deliver remedy donations and clinic supplies.
