box-sizing: inherit;">After my first day of Kindergarten, I asked my parents if they could only speak English to me in front of my new friends. &nbsp;It was the beginning of a decades-long assimilation into American culture, which unfortunately resulted in a regrettable detachment from my Filipino roots.<span fr-original-style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:Roboto,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;" style="font-size: 10.5pt; box-sizing: inherit;">Prior to starting school, I had always been surrounded by my large extended Filipino family, who primarily spoke Pangasinan rather than Tagalog. &nbsp;I also had fond memories of participating in a cultural dance troupe, performing the folk dance Itik Itik at the Museum of Science and Industry&#39;s Christmas Around the World and at the Illinois State Fair. &nbsp;Yet that was the extent of my knowledge of my ethnic background.<span fr-original-style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:Roboto,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;" style="font-size: 10.5pt;
