We are almost there!  *If you're looking for the short version pitch: The Creative Innovators Project, a student-led charity club, has beaten all odds and qualified 2 TEAMS to attend the Odyssey of the Mind WORLD FINALS (a creative problem-solving educational competition). We are a charitable organization comprised of a board of high school students (and me, Meghan, their necessary adult representative) who decided after leaving 8th grade to continue working together to solve problems despite their increased responsibilities. What started as an afterschool program 5 years ago has become a place for the thought leaders and innovators of the future to grow the next generation, modeling creativity, resiliency, and teamwork as the perfect solution to whatever challenges come their way in school and their personal lives. From the club's conception, they handled all aspects like an adult typically would, using me for consultation and mentorship only. The failures were countless this year, but through them, as always, they learned valuable lessons and, with heads down, continued to work weekends, late, via texts and calls to overcome whatever tried to stop them. They wrestled through paperwork, staffing, and deadline issues, just like we adults do. There were tears, blood, and lots of laughs. They filed paperwork, attended meetings, hosted Info Nights, and developed and worked on fundraisers. Overcoming adversity and never giving up, this group of amazing teens grew into a club of 25 children and adults—an authentic village. We took home 2 1st place trophies that day, but more importantly, lifelong friendships, skillsets, and mindsets had been created and strengthened amongst all. At the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, they will not only compete but also interact for three straight days with other students from around the world, bonding over creativity and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Mathematics). This experience enhances skill sets and allows them to return to their communities with even more possibilities and vision to apply to problems. Additionally, interacting with such a diverse community, their perspective of the world grows. They even make long-distance friends!Lastly, if you need another reason to support our efforts, my daughter states, "Staying in dorms for 3 days encourages us to go to college." FUNDS DUE BY 04/22 The funds raised will cover Room & Board at the University of Michigan, Food, Travel Expenses, Prop Shipping, Competition Fees, & Supplies. Any funds we raise above our $10,000 will be used to cover any additional costs we didn't initially anticipate or be placed in a fund to use for competition fees in the future.
