The Jeremy Wilson Foundation Musician Health &amp; Services Program is collecting tax-deductible donations on behalf of admired Portland musician Michael Dean Damron, AKA Mike D., that will go directly towards his living expenses during his current health crisis. Mike has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition and is currently unable to work. He is struggling with his day-to-day needs, and could use his friends’ and fans’ support during this challenging time.  _________________________________ Update 04/04/2025 Mike has just learned that along with the underlying cirrhosis, he has liver cancer. There is some more work-up coming along to determine what stage it is and exactly what treatment option is best.  As his doctor communicated to him, there is plenty of room for hope in the fact that he has treatment options, and he has a good amount of healthy liver to keep him going once this is all brought under control.  Mike is feeling positive about that.  He has been struggling a lot with his rapidly worsening symptoms over the past several weeks and is looking forward to starting treatment once the plan is ironed out.  Treating the cancer will of course bring its own set of challenges and then later Mike will need a lot of care to manage his cirrhosis, so this is going to be a long-haul situation.  Mike is extremely grateful for the support from his community through his Artist Relief Campaign, as well as the support he's receiving from JWF's Navigation Team tracking his health care and guiding him toward additional resources.____________________________________________ More information from Mike's bandmate, bassist Mole Harris: Hello everyone. We’re reaching out today because our friend and bandmate Mike D needs all our help. In February 2025, about as he was starting to rehearse for the first I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House full band show in several years, Mike started experiencing pain, nausea and difficulty eating. An initial doctor assessment suggested possibly a gallbladder issue, but as symptoms worsened and additional tests were done, it was determined that Mike has cirrhosis of the liver.  Since that time, Mike has been in and out of the hospital and doctor’s offices and because of the ongoing pain, weakness, and constant nausea, he has been unable to work. Day-to-day living presents a number of new challenges.  He’s now relying on friends to help with common tasks like walking his dog, and even simple things like eating a meal are difficult and painful. Mike is working with his doctors to hopefully improve his situation, but as many of you know even getting in to see a specialist nowadays is extremely difficult and delayed, so it is unlikely Mike will be able to work with any kind of regularity again any time soon. In addition, Mike is working on changing his housing situation to one that will be more comfortable and convenient as he deals with these health issues. Mike D has been a constant presence in the Portland music scene for close to 30 years with his band I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House, his prolific solo work, his collaborations with a myriad of Portland’s finest musicians, and his support of touring musicians in booking and production as a staff member at numerous Portland music venues for decades. We all know him as a great friend, a close confidant, an inspiring and passionate songwriter and performer, and one of the most unique musical voices that Portland has ever had. He’s helped so many get their musical start in this town, and when other musicians in our scene have faced a crisis like this in the past, Mike has often been at the forefront of organizing and playing benefit shows on their behalf. While he deals with these health issues, we’re collaborating with the excellent folks at the Jeremy Wilson Foundation to raise funds to help Mike with health and living related expenses. We know it’s tough out there for everyone right now, but if you’re able to contribute to our friend who has given so much of himself over the years, or at the very least if you’re able to help spread the word, Mike would be extremely grateful. Many thanks.  About JWF Artist Relief Campaigns The JWF helps alleviate some of the challenges associated with online crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe while offering donors the same personal connection. Key benefits of raising funds through a JWF Artist Relief Campaign: Tax deductible. Because we’re a 501(c)(3) organization, contributions are fully tax deductible. JWF grants don't count as income. We distribute financial support in the form of grants. Grants in the name of our recipients are paid directly to medical bills, landlords,  and other vendors or service providers. Because grants aren’t considered income, they aren’t taxed. They also can’t jeopardize a musician’s right to state-funded health care or any other assistance based on income.
