BMORE Design Week 2026 Closing Party

Creatives are often taught how to improve their craft, build a portfolio and land their first opportunity. They are rarely taught how to navigate the emotional pressures that come with a creative career. Comparison, rejection, difficult feedback, imposter syndrome and the pressure to constantly prove yourself can begin long before graduation. Left unchecked, these patterns can shape an unhealthy relationship with creativity and eventually lead to burnout. In this honest and practical virtual session, creative leader Barney Abramson and licensed marriage and family therapist Alisha Abramson combine industry experience, mental health expertise and their own lived experiences to help emerging creatives prepare for the realities of the profession. Attendees will learn how to separate their self-worth from their work, receive feedback without losing confidence, establish healthier boundaries and pursue their ambitions without sacrificing themselves along the way. You are not just building a portfolio. You are building a life and career you need to be able to sustain. Late Creates: Building a Creative Career Without Burning Out

Right now, AI can spit out a logo, a color palette, a whole brand voice in seconds. Canva's got a template for everything. Trend-chasing promises you'll look "professional" by tomorrow. But if you're a first-gen founder, a woman of color, a culture-driven business owner, or just new to your industry, here's the catch: that ease comes at a cost. Everyone starts looking the same, and our stories get diluted in the process. The messy, specific, hard-won parts of you, the parts that actually set you apart, get sanded down until there's nothing left to notice. This session is about breaking that on purpose. We'll look at the brand you've actually got right now (or the one AI, a template, or "what's trending" handed you) and get honest about it. Where have you been softening yourself? Adapting? Hiding the parts of your background that didn't fit some mold that was never built with you in mind? Then we'll build back up from there, using your actual life, culture, and experience as the foundation that makes your positioning stand out. This isn't an anti-AI rant. It's about deciding, on your own terms, when to use these tools and when to put them down, so what you end up with actually sounds and looks like you. Not like the ten other brands in your feed. You'll walk away understanding where your brand has been lying to you, and how to lean into your story, messy parts included, to rebuild something truer and more confident. Late Creates: Make, Break, Rebrand: Escaping the Algorithm to Find Your True Brand

This talk and workshop dives into the “Make, Break, Repeat” cycle through two distinct typography projects that embrace the friction between digital and analog. 📅 Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2026🕰️ Time: Matthew's Talk 2-2:30 p.m. Printmaking Workshop 3-4:30 p.m.📍 Location: University of Baltimore Robert L. Bogomolny Library, Room 412, 1420 Maryland Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21201 2:00 - 2:30pm • Trylon Shaded Typeface Revival with Matthew MayerInspired by Baltimore’s rich typographic history, this talk explores the Baltimore Type Foundry and BaltoType, then shifts to my ongoing revival of BaltoType's Trylon Shaded. I’ll explain how I discovered the typeface, digitized it, and used modern tools like laser cutting to bring the design back into physical form through block printing. By comparing the historical typeface with my digital revival and printed recreations, I’ll explore how contemporary tools and processes can bridge historical typography and modern design. 2:30 - 3pm • Break 3:00 - 4:30pm • Old Meets New: A Workshop on Digital Fabrication and Typography with Jacob Degeal and Matthew MayerThis workshop dives into the “Make, Break, Repeat” cycle through two distinct typography projects that embrace the friction between digital and analog. In the first project, Matthew resurrects Trylon, a mid-century slab serif of the now-defunct Baltotype foundry in Baltimore MD, digitally restored and translated into laser-cut relief blocks suitable for traditional letterpress printing. In the second, Jacob reimagines Raleway, an open-source geometric sans serif from the League of Moveable Type, as a modular stencil system with individually cut letter tiles that function within a portable grid framework. In our printmaking workshop, we will discuss the technical and iterative hurdles of optimizing type for fabrication and facilitate a hands-on printmaking session using our specimens. Whether you're drawn to historical type revival or excited about hacking open-source fonts into new forms, you'll leave with practical skills, fresh ideas for your own projects, and a one-of-kind print!

Please note that this workshop will involve printmaking inks and spray chalk. Spend an evening with Baltimore's creative community at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, with time to explore, connect, and dig into two conversations about navigating creative work in the age of AI and what comes next. 📅 Date: Tuesday, October 20, 2026🕰️ Time: Museum Access 4 - 6 p.m. Sessions 6 - 8:30 p.m.📍 Location: Baltimore Museum of Industry, 1415 Key HwyBaltimore, MD 21230, USA 4 - 6 PM • After Hours Museum Access and Light RefreshmentsCheck-in, explore, connect, and enjoy some light refreshments at the Baltimore Museum of Industry before the evening programming begins. 6 - 7 PM • Be the Lighthouse: Lead With Clarity, Warmth, and Teeth with Mimi Blanchard Designers need tools for ownership, direction, and momentum right now. In this lively, high-impact session, multimedia designer MiMi Blanchard shares a practical reset for the fear, bitterness, and noise draining the creative industry. Through client dynamics, campaign development, and the three essentials of analytics, context, data, and creativity, MiMi shows how designers can protect their judgment, establish professional boundaries, and turn insight into work that creates health, wellness, play, and profitability. The session also considers emerging tools, including AI, as part of a broader practice of discernment and creative leadership. This talk equips students, educators, and working designers to build sustainable practices, strengthen their communities, and start leading with clarity, warmth, and teeth. 7 - 7:30 PM • Break 7:30 - 8:30 PM • Why Designers Have an Advantage in the Age of AI with Michael JovelAI is changing how creative work gets made, but designers might be more ready for that shift than we realize. We already know how to work through ambiguity, question assumptions, explore different directions, and learn by making. As AI makes it easier for anyone to generate ideas, content, prototypes, and code, the real advantage is not just being able to make something. It is knowing what is worth making. This talk looks at why designers’ judgment, taste, empathy, and curiosity matter more than ever, and how we can use AI to experiment more freely, learn faster, and push our work further. About Mimi BlanchardMiMi Blanchard is a multimedia designer who builds vibrant, empathetic visual systems that help brands and communities have fun again. Her work spans brand strategy, campaign development, 3D illustrations, and motion graphics, turning research into memorable experiences. Driven by data and empathy, MiMi works alongside clients and creative teams to identify audience needs, solve communication problems, and build visual solutions that strengthen connection, health, wellness, and play. Guided by Solve et Coagula, she treats design as a collaborative practice of dissolving fear and making room for possibility. Her work helps teams sharpen their message, build customer relationships, and support the revenue that funds their next chapter. Outside the studio, she reads Scientific American, repaints Dollar Tree trinkets, and catches a baseball game when she can.https://mimis-method.com/ https://linktr.ee/mimi.designs.gfx About Michael JovelMichael Jovel is a product designer and digital experience leader at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, where he spends much of his time untangling complicated systems and making them easier for people to use. His work spans product strategy, UX, technology, and the occasional conversation about why something can’t simply be “fixed with a pulsating button.”Having worked across both design and development, Michael is especially interested in what happens when AI makes it possible to build almost anything. He believes designers are well-positioned to lead this next chapter, not because they have all the answers, but because they’re trained to ask better questions, make thoughtful judgments, and keep actual humans in the picture.https://www.linkedin.com/in/mjovel/https://www.fda.gov/

A Night at the Museum: Design and AI

The job board is a ghost town. So where is everyone actually making connections that lead to paychecks and work we love? If you’ve been applying for jobs, you’ve probably felt that the application process is broken. In a 2026 survey, the United Way found that D.C. has the second-longest average unemployment duration in the country at 6.6 months, while Maryland has the fifth-longest at 5.9 months. And in tech, it’s 9+ months. Meanwhile, the time to fill vacancies is increasing. Product, marketing, and creative teams are tasked with increasing output like never before. Employers are spending months interviewing the same 3 candidates. The work is there. But if you didn’t apply in the first 24 hours, your resume might never make it to the hiring manager’s desk. So what are we doing? Pulling from my time in B2B SaaS social media, in this talk I’ll share how your LinkedIn network can turn into career opportunities when the job board does not. This isn’t just a lecture. It’s an actionable session. Whether you don’t know how to use LinkedIn, you’re afraid to say the wrong thing, think it’s full of lunatics, or you don’t have time for it, I believe silently hitting apply isn’t the best use of our time. Bring your notes app and your LinkedIn profile.
