If a suicidal pilot is circling overhead and the only way to reach them is through an air traffic control tower&hellip; what does your team actually do? This 8-hour advanced course is built for crisis and hostage negotiators who want to be ready for one of the most complex scenarios out there. Negotiating with someone in the air is a completely different problem. You are dealing with distance, limited communication, multiple agencies, and a subject who may have no clear path to a safe outcome. We are going to break that down in a way that makes sense and gives you something you can actually use.You will learn how to:<ul data-end="1265" data-start="776" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li data-end="844" data-section-id="1xfswmp" data-start="776" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Establish communication with a pilot through air traffic control</li><li data-end="908" data-section-id="thrsrq" data-start="845" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Adjust negotiation strategies when your subject is airborne</li><li data-end="985" data-section-id="1t2kmj" data-start="909" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Work through jurisdiction issues across local, state, and federal levels</li><li data-end="1172" data-section-id="1xfh632" data-start="986" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Understand how agencies like the FAA, Customs and Border Protection, Transportation Security Administration, and North American Aerospace Defense Command fit into these incidents</li><li data-end="1265" data-section-id="1a2u8ii" data-start="1173" fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Approach situations involving private aircraft, charter flights, and commercial airlines</li></ul>This isn&rsquo;t theoretical. We&rsquo;ll walk through real incidents like the 2018 Horizon Air Q400 incident and the 2022 Tupelo plane theft incident to show what worked, what didn&rsquo;t, and what negotiators can take from them. If time allows, we&rsquo;ll run scenario-based training so you can apply what you learned and see how your team operates in this environment. This course is intended for current crisis/hostage negotiators. If seats are available, it may be opened to active law enforcement and federal partners working in or around aviation.

Negotiating in the Aviation Environment

The Bay Area Negotiator Group (BANG) is preparing for the 2026 BANG Conference &amp; Challenge, the largest crisis negotiation training events in the region. This event brings together law enforcement negotiators, trainers, and subject-matter experts for several days of learning, collaboration, and professional development. The 2026 conference will feature case studies, training presentations, networking opportunities, and a full-scale negotiation challenge involving multiple teams competing simultaneously. To make this event successful, we are looking for dedicated volunteers and experienced speakers who want to help support the crisis negotiation community.

The 2026 Crisis Negotiator Seminar brings together leading voices in law enforcement, mental health, and crisis intervention to explore the complexities of negotiating in non-traditional environments and methods. The 2026 Crisis Negotiator Challenge is a one-of-a-kind competition that puts crisis negotiation teams to the test in dynamic, high-pressure scenarios modeled after real-world incidents. Over the course of a full day, teams will rotate through a series of live, simulated negotiations &mdash; each designed to assess communication, strategy, teamwork, and decision-making under stress. These are not tabletop exercises &mdash; they are immersive, actor-driven scenarios with layered intelligence, evolving threats, and realistic injects that mirror the complexities of today&rsquo;s calls. What to Expect: Multiple Scenario Stations: Each team will face diverse situations ranging from suicidal subjects to barricaded suspects and emotionally volatile victims. Live Role Players &amp; Injects: Realistic characters and intelligence updates force teams to adapt and respond in real time. Evaluated Performance: Experienced judges from across the country will evaluate each team&rsquo;s tactics, communication, and crisis management skills. Team Growth: Walk away with detailed feedback, new ideas, and stronger operational readiness. This is more than a competition &mdash; it&rsquo;s a full-scale training event disguised as a challenge.
