Our mission

Welcome to Blue Mountain School

Tucked into the Appalachian woods of Floyd, Virginia, Blue Mountain School is a nonprofit, contemplative progressive school serving children from age 2.5 through middle school. Our seven classrooms are named for gemstones: Opal, Amethyst, Sapphire, Jade, Amber, Copper, and Ruby. Each one gives children a place to grow, question, create, and belong.

Learning Indoors and Out

At Blue Mountain School, strong academics and a deep connection to the natural world go hand in hand.

In the classroom, students dig into reading, writing, math, science, and social studies through hands-on, project-based learning. Lessons are designed to build real skills and real understanding. Our teachers know every child, meet them where they are, and challenge them to go further.

Outdoors, learning keeps going. Our wooded campus serves as a second classroom, where teachers lead structured lessons in science, observation, and problem-solving, and students build confidence, resilience, and curiosity along the way.

Together, the two create a rich learning experience that prepares children for whatever comes next.

Enrichment That Shapes the Whole Child

Our contemplative progressive approach pairs hands-on, student-centered learning with practices that nurture self-awareness, focus, and calm. Children learn by doing, exploring, and creating, and they also learn to understand themselves and the world around them.

That’s why enrichment at Blue Mountain School isn’t an extra. It’s essential. Much of it happens in our outdoor enrichment pavilion, where students learn surrounded by the sights and sounds of the seasons.

  • Music and Movement: students sing, dance, and learn instruments, building coordination, confidence, and a lifelong love of music.
  • Art: process-based art rooted in nature and creative expression. Student work has been exhibited at the Floyd Center for the Arts and Selu Conservatory.
  • Mindfulness: practices that help children build self-awareness, emotional regulation, and a calm, steady presence.

This Year’s Fundrasing Theme: Piece by Piece

Every year, Blue Mountain School is built piece by piece, and every person who supports us is part of the picture.

Currently, only 26% of our families pay the full cost of tuition — the rest are on a reduced rate. That’s exactly the kind of school we set out to build: one that works even when families can’t cover the full cost alone. But every time a family pays less than the full cost, it creates a real shortfall in what it actually takes to run Blue Mountain School — money we still need, whether or not tuition covers it. That gap doesn’t close itself. Every year, we fundraise to cover it, piece by piece.

This year, our goal is to raise $108,000 through community events, campaigns, and the generosity of friends and neighbors. Every ticket, every donation, and every shared link brings us one piece closer.
