Halloween Spooktacular

Haydn's The Creation: From Darkness to Light Experience one of classical music's most powerful moments as Boulder Symphony presents Joseph Haydn's magnificent oratorio, The Creation. From the mysterious sounds of chaos to the breathtaking explosion of orchestra and chorus at the words "And there was light!", Haydn takes audiences on an extraordinary musical journey through the birth of the universe. Inspired by the biblical book of Genesis, the Psalms, and John Milton's Paradise Lost, this masterpiece brings the natural world vividly to life. Hear the crashing seas, the rising sun, birds in flight, and even the smallest creatures, all portrayed through Haydn's astonishing musical imagination. Boulder Symphony joins forces with Voices West and three outstanding Colorado vocal soloists, Kristina Butler, Cody Laun, and Oliver Poveda Zavala, conducted by Devin Patrick Hughes, for a performance of Parts I and II of this celebrated masterpiece. Special Pre-Concert Presentation | 3:00 PM Arrive early for a special prerecorded conversation between conductor Devin Patrick Hughes and CU Boulder biblical scholar Samuel Boyd. An associate professor of Religious Studies, Boyd offers fascinating insights into the ancient creation narratives, the relationship between science and scripture, and the surprising details and humor found in Genesis. The presentation will be shown in the performance hall beginning at 3:00 PM, followed by the concert at 4:00 PM.

Sunday, October 18, 2026

Grace Commons, Boulder

Doors 2:45 PM

Preconcert talk (video) 3:00 PM

Concert at 4:00 PM

All sales final.

BSMA 5/16 Drum Circle

Join Boulder Symphony for an unforgettable evening of heroism in the face of adversity and universal brotherhood. As we conclude our 2025-2026 season, there’s no better way to do so than through the music of the great Ludwig van Beethoven. Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont is adapted from the great poet Goethe’s play, which tells the tale of Count Egmont’s struggle to bring about Dutch liberation under the imperial rule of Spain. Although he is eventually executed, Egmont’s rousing speech gains a life of its own as a triumph of the human spirit over oppression, and he is celebrated as a martyr. Beethoven’s work combines a slow introduction with soaring melodies, eventually concluding in a bombastic “Symphony of Victory”, echoing the Count’s fiery rhetoric. Local composer Holly McMahon’s work, “Bigfoot Steps on Boulder”, is the perfect companion piece. Depicting the mythical creature emerging from the woods to disrupt an otherwise serene scene of butterflies and birds, McMahon imagines Bigfoot as a stand-in for the adversities in life. This world premiere also lands on McMahon’s sister’s birthday, and her personal motto of “never turn back” is imbued in the work. Beethoven’s final symphony was also perhaps his most revolutionary, being the first to combine the orchestra with a full ensemble chorus along with four vocal soloists. In effect, it is also the work which casts the longest shadow, having haunted composers for generations since its premiere. The work moves from the turbulent, “open fifth” void of the first movement to the thunderous scherzo, followed by a sublime third movement. However, it is the Finale that remains a cultural touchstone, and the “Ode to Joy”, adapted from Friedrich Schiller’s poem of the same name, is a call for unity and fraternity. Seldom has a work remained so important and universal, and Boulder Symphony is excited to present the piece in its entirety in the heart of Boulder. Beethoven's Ninth

BSMA 4/18 The Shape of Sound Drum Class

As a part of our Beethoven Festival, Boulder Symphony is proud to present a chamber concert featuring a piano trio comprised of faculty from the University of Colorado Boulder. Internationally-renowned musicians Andrea Segar, Meta Weiss, and David Korevaar join to chart a course through the great composer’s musical journey from his middle period (the “Heroic period”) to his late period, ultimately culminating in his magnum opus, the Ninth Symphony. Beethoven’s “Archduke” Trio, composed for his friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria, stems from the end of his middle period and features a subtle balance between humor and drama. Here, Beethoven imbues the work with some of his most elegant melodies and an especially touching slow movement, which is quickly contrasted with an especially humorous last movement, culminating in an explosive finale. The “Hammerklavier” Sonata has garnered a reputation for its innovative and grandiose nature, and it’s a reputation well-earned. While the work is also dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, its scope and musical language is that of a different scale. Beethoven’s intense obsession with the fugue is present from the first movement, and it is accompanied by an increased study of dramatic contrast. The fugal fixation makes its way back in the finale, which opens in a grand three-voice fugue. Yet despite all of the complexity of the work, its soul is perhaps found in the introspective Andante sostenuto, which is amongst the most emotionally-resonant slow movements ever written by the composer. Together, these works chart a path from the heroic expansiveness of the middle period to the visionary transcendence of the late. Here, we come to understand Beethoven’s mastery of his craft, but also his grappling and desire for something greater than the confines of his craft. It is an intimate encounter with Beethoven at his most profound, preparing the ear and spirit for the exultant journey still to come. Accessibility seating available. All sales final.

Beethoven: Dedications

Boulder Symphony’s chamber orchestra shines with Mozart’s majestically playful Symphony No. 39 and C.P.E. Bach’s expressive Flute Concerto in D minor, featuring our very own principal flutist Michael Williams. The program begins with composer-in-residence John Clay Allen’s new composition Afterlight. This work utilizes Allen’s gift for melody to great effect, drawing the piece through a five minute long emotional crescendo. C.P.E. Bach's Flute Concerto in D minor is a quintessential example of Empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style), the new musical style that took over from the Baroque era. Unlike the balanced restraint of his contemporaries, C.P.E. Bach embraced sudden shifts in mood and jagged, rhythmic intensity, foreshadowing the Sturm und Drang of Beethoven and Mozart. Jean Sibelius’ Valse triste (literally “Sad Waltz”) is a masterpiece of Nordic melancholy. Depicting a dying woman who rises from her bed to dance with invisible guests, Sibelius’ work begins as a gentle, ghostly sway which builds into a feverish climax before vanishing into a chilling silence, leaving only the memory of the dance. Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 balances classical humor with a great deal warmth, and lyricism, thanks to Mozart’s decision to shift focus away from the traditional oboes to the clarinets, a relatively new addition to the symphony orchestra. Written during a frantic six-week period in 1788, Symphony No. 39 is the first of Mozart’s final symphonic “trilogy”, and of these three final symphonies, No. 39 is the most renowned for its melodic content. The Boulder Symphony unleashes the raw power of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring alongside the towering virtuosity of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 — an unforgettable night of primal rhythm, soaring lyricism, and symphonic fireworks. Pre-Concert Talk: Join us at 3:00 p.m. for a pre-concert talk hosted by featured composer Carter Pann! In addition to his own piece Tiny Tattoo, Pann will also be introducing the Rite of Spring and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 The program begins with Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, a fast, joyful curtain-raiser that has been winning over audiences for nearly two centuries. Its racing strings, sparkling orchestration, and infectious momentum helped define the sound of Russian orchestral music and opened the door for composers like Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky who would follow. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor is one of the most admired works ever written for piano and orchestra. Composed for his first American tour in 1909, it combines lyrical, song-like themes with extraordinary technical demands on the soloist. The concerto moves from quiet introspection to sweeping climaxes, creating a deeply expressive partnership between pianist and orchestra. The concerto features pianist Jiarui Cheng, 2024 International Keyboard Odyssiad® & Festival Concerto Gold Medalist, in a tie with Artem Kuznetsov, and most recently seen in the 2025 Van Cliburn Competition. Carter Pann’s Tiny Tattoo brings the program into the present day with music that is colorful, rhythmic, and full of personality. Compact and energetic, the piece shows Pann’s knack for writing music that connects quickly and communicates directly with listeners. The concert concludes with Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a work that changed the course of music when it premiered in 1913. Its pounding rhythms, biting dissonance, and raw, primal energy still feel shocking and electric today. More than a century later, it remains one of the most visceral experiences in the orchestral repertoire. This two-hour session explores West African Djembe Music as a complete rhythmic ecosystem. Instead of focusing on isolated parts, we look at how the bass drums, bell, and djembe voices layer, interact, and create the larger shape of the groove. We examine the pulse, phrasing, and cycles so you can orient yourself inside the rhythm with clarity and confidence. This isn’t rigid technique — it’s a map for moving through the groove with awareness. Where Technique Meets Insight As the structure becomes clear, the rhythm starts to feel different — rolling, stretching, breathing. You begin to listen to the whole ensemble, not just your drum, noticing when the rhythm anchors, opens, or invites a response. Technique blends with intuition, and the rhythm becomes a living system rather than a sequence. Rhythm as Community Ensemble playing shows how groups function: each part matters, none stands alone. The groove emerges from shared timing, cooperation, and listening. Drumming becomes a model of community—balancing your voice with others, contributing without overpowering, creating one collective pulse. Rhythm as Inner Reflection The rhythmic ensemble flow often mirrors your inner world: moments of grounding, repetition, expression, tension, and release. As you sit inside the rhythm, you may notice how your mind moves like the music—steady, busy, playful, or spacious. It becomes a gentle practice of embodied self-awareness. A Unified Experience By blending structure, group awareness, and inner reflection, drumming becomes more than rhythm. It becomes a system you can navigate, a community you participate in, and a mirror that reflects your own internal world. BSMA 2/7 The Shape of Sound Drum Class

Music Behind the Movies: The Sundance Film Festival offers a one-of-a-kind concert experience that brings the sound of independent cinema to life through live orchestral performance. This original program celebrates the wide range of musical voices that shape modern film storytelling. The evening features music by Lesley Barber, Emile Mosseri, Colin Stetson, Nainita Desai, and Michael Abels, alongside classical and popular works that play a central role in several of the films represented. Selections from Manchester by the Sea highlight Lesley Barber’s original score alongside classical music by George Frideric Handel and Tomaso Albinoni, including excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and Albinoni’s Adagio for Strings and Organ. These works demonstrate how earlier music can be recontextualized to deepen emotional storytelling in contemporary film. Music from Minari features the film’s composer, Emile Mosseri, who joins the orchestra live at the piano, offering audiences a rare opportunity to hear a film score performed by its creator. The program also explores darker and more experimental sound worlds, including Colin Stetson’s unsettling music for Hereditary, as well as the intimate documentary scores of Nainita Desai for The Reason I Jump and The Deepest Breath. Music by Michael Abels adds a bold contemporary voice to the evening. Iconic moments from Reservoir Dogs demonstrate how existing songs can become inseparable from cinematic identity, including Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf and Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel. Performed by the full forces of the Boulder Symphony and members of the Boulder Symphony Chorus, this concert invites audiences to experience film music beyond the screen—where sound stands on its own as storytelling, atmosphere, and emotional force. Content Advisory:This concert includes film excerpts that contain mature themes and occasional strong language. Accessibility: Accessible seating is available on the main level of Grace Commons. Ticketing Policy: All sales final.
