Chronic Pain Project

The Chronic Pain Project empowers artists with chronic pain to share their creations, fostering community and reducing isolation through art. We facilitate connections between artists and community through shared experiences and creative expression.

The Chronic Pain Project (CPP) views art, created by those with chronic pain, as a form of communication and community building. Our art creates an exchange between artist and viewer, that can enrich the lives of both.&nbsp;&nbsp; This group makes space for artists to share their creations with other artists. &nbsp;Sharing art with the general population is our core mission, but sharing art between the artists themselves builds community and decreases isolation. You do NOT have to enter your work in our exhibit to participate in these sessions.&nbsp; Through facilitated online groups, artists can share a recent creation and tell the story behind the piece.The facilitator will do their best to create a safe place for sharing and creating community.&nbsp; A few notes before joining.&nbsp;1. This workshop is a great place to share and find common experiences, but it is not therapy.&nbsp;2. The workshop is a place to share art inspired by pain, but it&#39;s not a self-help group.3. Feelings brought up by the art are great, but this is not a place of artistic criticism.4. It is a place to build community and decrease the isolation inherent in chronic pain.5. This session will NOT be recorded to encourage honesty and sharing.&nbsp; Photos of art can be digitally submitted up one day prior, to the facilitator prior to the group so that they can be compiled for sharing online.&nbsp; To keep this a small and intimate conversation, only 10 people will be able to participate. If you have participated in this group before, but do not have new art to share, you are welcome to join and engage.&nbsp; Everyone is invited to participate. We suggest a $10 donation. If you can do more to help out others, please do! If $10 is not in your current budget, we&#39;ve got you! If you are experiencing a serious crisis due to your chronic pain, please seek medical attention via 911 or 988 for mental health issues.&nbsp;

Chronic Pain Art Workshop This is a hands-on workshop where individuals can explore their chronic pain through a guided art experience.&nbsp; Attend this workshop to explore and express your unique experience. Carve out some time to relax and create art! Leave with your own collage art piece and a stronger sense of community and self-understanding.&nbsp; The workshop location is fully accessible and some dexterity friendly supplies will be available. If you need anything else to participate, please reach out.&nbsp; About the Facilitator Gina Nelson from Nurture 3 Healing &nbsp;is an artist and a healer. From an early age she longed to be a light in the darkness for her own journey and for the journey of all seekers. Ceremony and ritual are a powerful part of her practice and teaching. &nbsp;She is dedicated to supporting mothers and women regain balance when the connection between and mind and body get misaligned. Her work focuses on the opportunities for healing that arise when our bodies, hearts and minds call out for our attention in a variety of ways. When we give &ldquo;voice&rdquo; and priority to exactly where we are in the moment of our lives, a sense of realignment, clarity, awareness, compassion and integration begins.&nbsp; Led with care and respect, our time together centers comfort, choice, and community. Artists Reconnecting Through Sharing (ARTS) September 2026

This 60 minute virtual workshop creates space to notice, validate, and externalize pain, without problem-solving, pathologizing, or forcing positivity. Using whatever art materials you have at home, we&#39;ll engage in an expressive visual dialog with our pain, arriving at new understanding through form, color, and texture. The session will include a short grounding exercise, an adaptive art directive, and gentle reflection. No art experience necessary! Kaitlin Maud, ATR-P, LPC Associate, is a mixed media artist, Art Therapist, and founder of Maud and Moon, a creative therapy studio in Austin, Texas. She supports adults navigating trauma, chronic illness, disability, and neurodivergence through creative expression. Kaitlin lives with Fibromyalgia, which shapes both her clinical perspective and her respect for the ways art expresses what words cannot. Kaitlin brings her belief in art as advocacy to her work as both an artist and facilitator with the Chronic Pain Project.

The Art of Wellbeing is a 1.5 -hour workshop on using creativity as a supportive practice for self-discovery and resilience facilitated by Kailey Fry. This workshop is not therapy; it&rsquo;s a supportive community gathering hosted by&nbsp;The Chronic Pain Project. Kailey knows that traditional advice often falls short. She created the Creative Compass, a framework utilizing 16 Creative Archetypes, to allow people to explore their wellbeing using creative processes. Her workshop, The Art of Wellbeing, invites participants to use this framework to process complex emotions, translate their pain experience into something tangible, and build a restorative creative practice that adapts to their body&rsquo;s needs.

Facilitator Bio: Alexis Rehrmann is a writer and editor who has pursued the connection between story and healing throughout much of her creative and professional life. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Portland Monthly Magazine, PDX Parent, the Intima Journal of Narrative Medicine and Anastomosis, Stanford University School of Medicine&rsquo;s humanities and literary journal. She is on staff at the Lewis &amp; Clark College Center for Community and Global Health and on the board &nbsp;of the Northwest Narrative Medicine Collaborative. &nbsp;She holds a CPA in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University and a BFA in Theatre from NYU, Tisch School of the Arts.&nbsp;</div>

The Chronic Pain Project (CPP) views art, created by those with chronic pain, as a form of communication and community building. Our art creates an exchange between artist and viewer, that can enrich the lives of both.&nbsp;&nbsp; This new offering makes space for artists to share their creations with other artists. &nbsp;Sharing art with the general population is our core mission, but sharing art between the artists themselves builds community and decreases isolation. You do NOT have to enter your work in our exhibit to participate in these sessions.&nbsp; Through facilitated online groups, artists can share a recent creation and tell the story behind the piece.The facilitator will do their best to create a safe place for sharing and creating community.&nbsp; A few notes before joining.&nbsp;1. This workshop is a great place to share and find common experiences, but it is not therapy.&nbsp;2. The workshop is a place to share art inspired by pain, but it&#39;s not a self-help group.3. Feelings brought up by the art are great, but this is not a place of artistic criticism.4. It is a place to build community and decrease the isolation inherent in chronic pain.5. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Portland Monthly Magazine, PDX Parent, the Intima Journal of Narrative Medicine and Anastomosis, Stanford University School of Medicine’s humanities and literary journal. This calming Art-&amp;-Wellness Workshop is designed to support stress relief and mindful expression while creating unique artwork in response to artwork in the current exhibit Embodied Existence.&nbsp; Led by Lewis and Clark graduate students, this workshop allows you to choose your materials from those provided and create a piece that embodies your existence for you to take home and enjoy.&nbsp; This workshop is perfect for anyone seeking a creative outlet for living with or chronic pain or those caregiving someone living with chronic pain. It is a welcoming environment where your creativity can flow. Embodied Existence - Workshop by Chronic Pain Project at Lewis and Clark College

We are often told that movement is part of pain management, but hardly ever given options that are realistic within our pain levels. While our main image of Irish dance is the virtuosity of Riverdance, it is, fundamentally, a folk dance in which all community members participated. &quot;Old-style&quot; Irish dance is relaxed and accessible, leaving room for individual flare and modification. In this workshop, we will take advantage of the inherent structures of Irish dance to find movement pathways that feel good and allow us to be in community with each other. It&#39;s an opportunity to build relationships with our bodies, our community, and movement in general. Participants may want two sticks or similar object that is comfortable for them hold. They may also want to ensure a comfortable chair is available and/or space where they can walk at least 2 steps in any direction. Jo Troll is a disabled queer art-maker, teacher, and creative life coach with a particular focus on using tradition as a means to build connection and community. Through teaching and community building, they actively work to create space for folks who &ldquo;slip through the cracks&rdquo; of other existing systems. Jo has studied Irish dance with Kieran Jordan since they were 11 years old, holds a graduate diploma in dance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and is experienced in a variety of traditional percussive dance practices. They perform around Boston and virtually, including as part of OnStage Dance Company&rsquo;s Residency Program, Dancing Queerly, and Meraki&rsquo;s Y.A.M.S. The House Sessions and teach regular virtual adult dance classes with students across the US and in Canada. Jo also coordinates queer dance workshops in a variety of styles to create safe, accessible dance space and loves every opportunity they get to dance with others!

We aim to clarify workplace protections for both patients and their loved ones, ensuring that professional stability remains intact during the most challenging moments of treatment. Speaker bioRosa Park Neves of RP7 Online LLC is a Paid Leave Strategist specializing in the intersection of health and the workplace. With a degree in Human Resource Management and experience in benefits administration, they bring a deep understanding of general corporate, state and federal policies. Furthermore, their previous role as a state-contracted Unemployment Claims Adjudicator provides a rare, &quot;inside-out&quot; view of how leave protections are enforced. Last but not least, on a personal note Rosa is a working mom with multiple chronic illnesses raising 2 children in a bi-lingual, multi-generational, neurodiverse household

Artists Reconnecting Through Sharing (ARTS) November 2026

This gathering allows people living with chronic pain and those who love and care for them to process their experiences with pain. We&#39;ll create art and poetry from recycled medical texts and ephemera.&nbsp; We will provide some materials to get participants started and encourage them to bring their own de-identified items as they feel comfortable. These might include items they would typically throw away such as pill bottles or medical notices. Sarah Stern, MA, MS, is the founder of With Care Creative. She is the Health Communication and Design Lead at Open Notes Labs which studies how patient access to their health information strengthens communication, trust, and safer care.&nbsp;In her spare time, you&rsquo;ll find her making artwork about her patient experience and leading creative workshops that prioritize radical rest in her hometown of Washington, D.C. Meredith Mangold, CPXP, is the founder of Empower Health Strategies and a board member of the Chronic Pain Project living in the Washington, DC area. With more than 15 years of navigating life with multiple chronic conditions, she helps healthcare innovators and organizations design care experiences that make patients and caregivers feel seen, supported, and empowered. At the end of the workday, you can find Meredith on the couch with her two dogs, teaching herself to watercolor while watching true crime documentaries.
