Coastal Carolina Rabbit Rescue

LXCL:Coastal Carolina Rabbit Rescue is a small, volunteer-led, foster-based organization dedicated to helping domestic rabbits in the coastal Carolinas. Through rehoming support, education, and partnerships, we work to expand safe, humane options for rabbits in need while building the foster network and community support needed to grow our impact.

We are heartbroken to share that Possum has passed away. Possum was first brought in by mistake as a wild rabbit to <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.possumwoodacres.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary.</a> Once they realized he was a domestic rabbit in urgent need of specialized care, they contacted us. Possum has an extremely large mass extending from his chest and side up over his shoulder and back, and his body is covered in scabs. After being seen by our wonderful vet partners at <a fr-original-style="" href="https://pawsclawsah.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Paws &amp; Claws Animal Hospital</a>, we received more hopeful news than we first expected: the mass appears to be an abscess, and the doctor believes he may actually have multiple abscesses caused by multiple bite wounds or attacks. We may never know whether this happened before or after he was abandoned, but what is clear is that Possum has suffered greatly. After veterinary evaluation, we had hope that Possum could be helped through surgery and continued treatment. But after a sudden decline, the team at Paws &amp; Claws determined that he was likely septic from an abscess that had ruptured internally. Because his condition was so grave and he was suffering, we made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully. We are devastated. Possum was sweet, social, curious, and eager to be part of daily life. He had clearly been through so much, yet in the time he was with us, he was surrounded by love, comfort, and compassionate care. We are deeply grateful to everyone who donated, shared his story, prayed for him, and held hope for him. Your kindness gave Possum dignity, safety, and love in his final days. Donations made to this campaign will first help cover Possum&rsquo;s final veterinary expenses. Any additional funds raised beyond that will be used in Possum&rsquo;s memory to help the next rabbit in urgent need of rescue and medical care.
