Dance Clarinets Directed by JD Parran - music of Geri Allen and Carla Bley

The acclaimed concert series Soup &amp; Sound comes to Seattle - The Chapel!&nbsp;DoYeon Kim (gayageum, percussion, voice)/Andrew Drury&nbsp;(percussion, voice) Formed in the Summer of 2025 the duo of rising star DoYeon Kim and native Seattlite Andrew Drury provides a platform for two visceral and pioneering musicians who channel Korean and radical percussion traditions. The performance will feature &nbsp;wide-ranging musical improvisations with embedded compositions that evoke chaos, order, catastrophe, and calm. DoYeon Kim (b. 1991, Seoul) is internationally recognized for introducing the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither, into contemporary music. The first gayageum player admitted to New England Conservatory and Berklee&rsquo;s jazz programs, Kim merges Korean idioms with jazz and improvisation. She has been honored by the Korean Grammy Awards, Berklee &amp; New Music USA&rsquo;s Next Jazz Legacy, and has served on the faculties of NEC and The New School. Her work spans solo performances, intercontinental collaborations, and leading roles with ensembles like ACC X Music Festival and the Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra. Her collaborators include Mark Dresser, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber and Peter Evans.&nbsp;Andrew Drury&nbsp;is a drummer, improviser, composer, bandleader, and a pioneer of extended techniques for percussion, most notably in the use of drums as a wind instruments. Rooted in lifelong fascinations with Nature and African-diasporic creativity, and cultivated by a decade-long mentorship with Ed Blackwell, Drury&rsquo;s work combines a reverence for musical tradition with an openness to the infinite possibilities of the moment. He has worked with artists such as Myra Melford, Wadada Leo Smith, Ingrid Laubrock, Annea Lockwood, Howard Johnson, and Nels Cline. Originally from the Seattle area, he lives in Brooklyn, New York. Dirt Frequencies @ Soup & Sound: a deep dive into soiled sounds with Tessa Brinckman, Scott L. Miller, and Jane Rigler

The Dance Clarinets—an ensemble of a dozen clarinets of all shapes and sizes plus drums, ledby J. D. Parran—performs a music from the Ragtime era by the seminal bandleader, unionorganizer, and advocate of African-American music and culture, James Reese Europe. A set ofmusic with clarinets and a jazz rhythm section follows the large ensemble. Europe was the musical director for the 369 th Infantry Brigade, an all African-American andPuerto Rican military unit that was sent to the front lines in France at the end of World War Iand that became the single most decorated unit of the war, that never lost a battle, and thatwas nicknamed “the Harlem Hellfighters” for their ferocity. They revolutionized music bypresenting an African-diasporic revisioning of marching band music that amazed Europeanaudiences and that provided a link between marching band music and jazz big band music.
