Wednesday, Sept 16 | 6:30–7:30 pm Kick things off with Allison Chase's "Cultivation-to-Competition" workshop. Come learn her secrets for growing show-stopping blooms before the big weekend!Friday, Sept 18 | Dahlia drop Off 1:00 pm–6:00 pmBring your bloom(s) in to Dewey Hall for entry. Cut your blooms in the cool morning or evening hours, choosing flowers at their peak – fully open, crisp, and free of water spots. Cut long stems(at least 12" if possible)at an angle and place them immediately in warm water, stripping foliage that would sit below the waterline. Let blooms condition in a cool, dark spot for several hours or overnight before transport. When it's time to travel, use individual bloom boxes or buckets so flowers don't touch each other or bruise against the container, and keep them out of direct heat in the car. Support necks of larger blooms so they don't snap in transit. Before drop-off, groom each bloom carefully: remove any damaged or discolored petals, gently reshape any that got crushed, and wipe away pollen and dirt. There will be volunteers on-hand to take down your information and assist you with entering your bloom(s) in the contest.Saturday, Sept 19 | The Big Day | Noon-4:30 pm This is what we've been waiting for! Dewey Hall Mahjong Night – Experienced and Open Play – Oct 28, 2026

Having been interested in plants since his childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Catskills-based landscape designer and garden writer Dean Riddle finds inspiration in our region’s rocky terrain and topography. It is his goal to create gardens that connect to both personality and place – from the narratives and history of its inhabitants to the sylvan settings, architecture, and materials that the site offers. His work combines his education as a horticulturist in North Carolina and his love of woody plants that he curated while working at Hillier Gardens in the UK to his experience gardening in the Northeast and the inspiration of the surrounding environment. In this conversation, he will share his ideas – as well as photographs of gardens he has created over the years -- for approaching a space and creating a landscape that feels personal while being connected to the natural kingdom it inhabits. Your $25 suggested donation does more than get you a seat. It helps plant a new Arts-and-Crafts garden behind Dewey Hall, with a stone terrace and an accessible entrance so everyone can enjoy the Hall for the next 140 years. Seating is limited, so reserve your place today.

Peter Bevacqua honed his gardening skills studying with Christopher Lloyd and Fergus Garrett at Great Dixter, and with Helen Dillon in her garden in Dublin. He came to garden and landscape design after 25 years in advertising, where he was creative director in the New York office of an internationally well-known ad agency. Combining his background in art and design with this lifelong addiction to plants, Peter approaches the landscape in a manner akin to how he applied his skills to his work in advertising, taking an understanding of a client’s needs (or his own in the case of his garden) and working to create artful solutions that are aesthetically pleasing and stand the test of time. Sharing ideas and photographs of his own garden and those of clients, Peter lays out an approach that demonstrates how gardens can be beautiful throughout the seasons, sharing ideas on how to make one’s own landscape come to life all year long. His garden has been twice in The New York Times, a featured garden in The Gardens of the Hudson Valley by Monacelli Press, and in the Private Gardens of the Hudson Valley. Dewey Hall Mahjong Night – Experienced and Open Play – Dec 2, 2026

Jill Nooney and her husband Bob Munger spent 40 years creating their 30-acre garden in eastern New Hampshire. The result, Bedrock Gardens, is now a public garden that is filled with Jill’s ideas for approaching the landscape and Bob’s clever and synergistic implementation of her ideas and dreams. The garden synthesizes their creativity, their love of plants, and their approach to shaping the land into a series of landforms, a stumpery, forests, pond gardens, and meadows, that also serve as a backdrop for Jill’s artwork. The landscape is inspired and inspires the creativity of its inhabitants and its visitors. A trained social worker and a landscape designer who graduated from the Radcliffe Seminars in Landscape Design, Jill’s work combines her passion for plant collecting with her love of found and repurposed objects, and, as she shares the tales captured in her book, The Making of Bedrock Gardens, we are brought into the irreverent and moving landscape she has created.
