EarthLab Virginia fosters eco-literacy through immersive environmental education, bridging the gap between people and nature. We aim to inspire appreciation for local ecology, empowering communities to address environmental challenges together.

Beat the heat and start your week by getting outside in community. Join EarthLab at Byrd Park on the evening of Sunday August 9th. We&#39;ll gather with s&rsquo;mores and then explore together through a playful nature walk. What to Expect:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Casual Vibes &ndash; No naturalist or science background required.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Field Walk &ndash; Head out for a guided walk and learn about some of our local species. We&#39;ll have field guides and hand lenses to share</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Scavenger Hunt &ndash; Your curiosity will drive what we explore, , and we&#39;ll also focus on local bird and plant species.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Community Connection &ndash; Share the experience with fellow folks who love exploring nature.</li></ul>📅 Date: August 9th, 2026 ⏰ Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm 📍Location: Byrd Park, will share exact meetup location after registration 🎟️ Tickets: Free, suggested donation $8 Spots are limited!🔹 Who Should Come? Anyone curious about our local species and connecting with the land. The walk will be geared toward youth and adults ages 11+, but young people of any age accompanied by a parent/guardian are welcome. 🔹 What to Bring? Comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a water bottle, and a sense of wonder. A nature journal if you have one (but if not, that&#39;s ok!)🔹 Will there be vegan s&#39;mores options?&nbsp;There sure will! Forest School for Grown Ups: Fantastic Fungi and LichenThere&#39;s just something about fungi that fascinates us all! Whether you&rsquo;re curious about mushrooms, captivated by lichens, or just love learning outdoors, this outing will help you get to know the often unexplored world beneath our feet (and on our trees, logs, and rocks!) 🍄 What to Expect:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">An Overview &ndash; Learn the basics of the fungi life cycle and how these incredible organisms reproduce.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Intro to ID &ndash; Get hands-on tips for identifying common fungi and lichen in our region.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Field Walk &ndash; Head out for a guided walk to practice your new skills.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Spore Prints &ndash; Try your hand at making a spore print to take home.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Community Connection &ndash; Share the experience with fellow folks who love exploring nature.</li></ul>No prior knowledge is required&mdash;just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore together. 📅 Date: Sunday October 4th, 2026 ⏰ Time: 10:00AM - 12:00PM📍Location: Dorey Park, will share meetup location after registration🎟️ Tickets:&nbsp;$15-$25, sliding scale. Whether you&#39;re a total beginner, a Wingspan enthusiast ready to take birding outside, or someone who&#39;s dabbled with binoculars before, join us to break down the basics of getting to know our local birds and those just&nbsp;passing through by sight and sound. Forest School for Grown Ups: Creatures of the NightIt&#39;s spooky season, and that means more than just candy, costumes, and creepy decor. Gather in community to bust myths and learn more about two common, but sometimes stealthy, nocturnal powerhouses, bats and owls.&nbsp; 🦉 🦇&nbsp;What to Expect:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Intro to ID &ndash; Find out which species lives in our area and common ways to tell them apart&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Field Walk &ndash; Head out for a guided night walk to spot these nocturnal neighbors and learn more about their role in our ecosystem</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Community Connection &ndash; Meet folks who might just become your new nature outing pals.</li></ul>No prior knowledge is required&mdash;just bring your curiosity and a willingness to explore together. 📅 Date: November 1st, 2026 ⏰ Time: 6:00PM - 8:00PM📍Location: Location TBD (it will be a park in or near RVA)🎟️ Tickets:&nbsp;$15-$25, sliding scale.
