🎉 FAIR5: Five Years of Facing Inequality with ActionIn the summer of 2020, amidst one of the most pivotal moments in modern American history, Facing American Inequalities Responsibly (FAIR) was born. What began as a rejected mural proposal in Maple Heights, Ohio, transformed into a movement rooted in equity, service, and hope. Our founder, Zhane McCorvey, refused to be silenced—and instead built an organization that would amplify young voices and invest in lasting change. Now, five years later, we’re proud to celebrate our journey — and we’re inviting you to help shape what comes next.FAIR5 is more than an anniversary — it's a rebirth.We’ve awarded micro-grants. We’ve hosted programs that address real community pain. The HBCU Experience Project: Student voices. Captured experiences. Shared stories. What does the HBCU experience mean to the students living it?That is the question behind The HBCU Experience Project, a student-centered initiative from Facing American Inequalities Responsibly (FAIR) designed to listen to HBCU students, learn from their experiences, and give selected students the opportunity to have their HBCU experience professionally captured. The project launches during Homecoming Week, but Homecoming is only the starting point. The HBCU experience is bigger than one week. It is the friendships, traditions, organizations, classrooms, mentors, campus culture, celebrations, challenges, and everyday moments that shape a student&#39;s college journey.FAIR wants students to help tell that story in their own words and through their own experiences. How It WorksBeginning Sunday of Homecoming Week, students at participating HBCU campuses will be invited to enter FAIR&#39;s photography opportunity. Every student who enters will have the opportunity to complete FAIR&#39;s HBCU Student Experience Pre-Survey. The survey allows FAIR to begin learning how participating students describe their HBCU experience across three areas: SHOW UPCampus InvolvementHow do students participate in their campus community? CONNECTStudent EngagementWhat people, activities, traditions, and experiences connect students to their HBCU? BELONGSense of BelongingWhat makes students feel connected to their university and feel that they belong? Students will be able to submit throughout Homecoming Week. The following Sunday, FAIR will announce the selected photography participants.The Photography Experience Selected students will receive a complimentary professional photoshoot before the fall semester ends. FAIR will provide emerging photographers with a $500 photography microgrant for their work. The initial pilot will support:2 HBCU campuses 4 student participants 2 emerging photographers $500 per photographer $1,000 total direct photographer funding Students will not be charged for their photography experience.Rather than simply photographing students at Homecoming, the project gives students the opportunity to help determine what part of their HBCU experience they want captured. Their photoshoot may reflect the people, places, traditions, activities, communities, or experiences that are meaningful to them. Instead, FAIR is creating a community-based opportunity to listen, learn, document, and build. The Bigger VisionThe first edition of The HBCU Experience Project is intentionally small.FAIR is starting with two campuses, four photography participants, and two emerging photographers so we can test the model, listen to students, learn what works, and determine how the initiative can grow responsibly.Over time, FAIR hopes to expand the project to additional HBCU campuses, more students, and more emerging photographers. For students: A chance to have a meaningful part of their HBCU experience professionally captured and preserved. For photographers: A paid creative opportunity to document authentic student experiences. For FAIR: An opportunity to listen to students, learn from their experiences, and develop a stronger student-centered initiative.
