Folklore Society

The Folklore Society promotes and preserves the literary arts in the Tri-Cities. We support local authors, host events, and foster community engagement through storytelling and literature, ensuring a vibrant cultural landscape for all.

Shelf Life puts books by local and regional authors into free libraries and book exchanges across the Tri-Cities.Every three months, readers vote on a shortlist of books by writers from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. The winning book gets purchased at full retail from a Tri-Cities indie bookstore, and we tuck copies into free libraries around the metro with a Folklore bookplate inside so whoever finds it knows where it came from.Your gift is what buys the books. Every $25 places a new title in a free library somewhere in Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, or West Richland, where a reader can take it home, pass it along, or drop it back into a different library and keep it moving.

The Tri-Cities has readers. It's time we had a literary scene to match. The Author Fund is how we pay for it: readings, signings, and visits from the writers of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Where your gift goes:Most authors pay their own way to events, even the traditionally published ones. Publisher tour support has mostly disappeared unless your name is on the bestseller list, so when a writer drives out to the Tri-Cities for a signing, the gas, the hotel, and the dinner usually come out of their own pocket. The Author Fund exists so they don't have to.

$25 stocks the signing table with pens, bookplates, and a thank-you card

$100 lets us take a visiting author out to a proper dinner

$150 covers banners, signage, and swag so an event feels like an occasion

$300 pays for gas and a hotel night, enough to bring an author down for a signing

$800 covers a full weekend: two nights, meals, and the drive out and back

$1,500 fully sponsors a weekend event for a regional author from start to finish.

Every contribution adds up. A $25 gift from one reader plus twenty-nine others is $750, which is a night out that somebody's going to tell their friends about. Folklore Society is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

Sagebrush and Spines fuels the Author Fund 💬📚 Your gift helps bring writers to the Tri-Cities for our first annual book fair! On May 15, 2027, Pacific Northwest authors are coming to the Gesa Carousel of Dreams in Kennewick to meet their readers, and the fair is free for everyone who walks in. A gift here goes toward making the day a good one for the writers who are driving in, whether that turns out to mean lunch on us or a hotel night, depending on how generous the Tri-Cities decides to be. Give $50 or more and your name goes on the website and on the thank-you sign at the entrance.
