Foundation For The Preserv Of The Caroline Dormon Nature Preserv Inc

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve Inc. is dedicated to conserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve through education, stewardship, and community engagement.

&ldquo;Nature waits for no man, and to lose the legacy left to posterity, by our neglect, was unthinkable.&rdquo; - Richard Johnson Briarwood desperately needs a reliable irrigation system. At this point, it is not simply an improvement we would like to make. It is critical to the future of the plants and historic gardens we care for here. For many years, Briarwood had an irrigation system that supplied water throughout important areas of the preserve. That system was demolished when an EF-1 tornado struck Briarwood in 2019. Since then, we have had no adequate way to provide water to our historic gardens and important plant collections during periods of extreme heat and drought. We saw the consequences of that firsthand during the severe drought of 2023 when we had just over 60 days with no rain.&nbsp; Despite our efforts to keep plants watered by hand, we lost numerous established azaleas and mountain laurels, along with other important plants. One of our most devastating losses was a Florida torreya, a critically endangered tree and one of the rare plants growing at Briarwood. We simply cannot sustain another drought like 2023 without a dependable way to provide water where it is needed. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to completely rebuild Briarwood&rsquo;s irrigation system and once again provide reliable water to our historic gardens and important plants throughout the preserve. We have spent the past several years seeking grant funding for this project and have submitted multiple applications, but so far we have not been successful in securing the funding needed to rebuild the system. We cannot continue to wait and hope that funding comes through before the next severe drought. That is why we are now asking our friends, visitors, and supporters to help us make this project possible. We also hope the new system can eventually support the greenhouse we are working toward for Briarwood, where we plan to propagate and care for native and important plant species. Caroline Dormon spent her life collecting, growing, studying, and protecting plants at Briarwood. Many of the gardens and plant collections here are part of that legacy. Protecting them requires more than reacting when the next drought arrives. We need to be prepared before it does. Every contribution to this project, large or small, will help us build a more resilient Briarwood and better protect these plants for the future.
