Freedom Reimagined A Juneteenth Celebration

Beatrice Place Homes is a groundbreaking, $9.1 million housing development in Charlotte's University Area. Spearheaded by New Chapter Alliance (NCA), a local non-profit founded by Kenny Robinson, it stands out as Charlotte’s first housing project specifically tailored for justice-impacted families experiencing homelessness due to background barriers. The project delivers a strategic, comprehensive approach to breaking cycles of housing instability and opening a realistic path to long-term homeownership. The Pathway to Home OwnershipBeatrice Place Homes is designed as a 24-unit apartment complex (featuring two- and three-bedroom layouts) that acts as a launching pad for families earning between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Instead of just offering temporary shelter, the development uses an integrated model to transition families from rental stability to permanent property ownership.

Financial Literacy & Credit Repair: NCA provides dedicated, on-site financial training. Because criminal justice involvement often leaves individuals with damaged or non-existent credit histories, credit rebuilding is a foundational part of the curriculum.

Homeownership Counseling: Before residents look for a house, they undergo structured homebuyer preparation. This demystifies the mortgage application process, budgeting, and the long-term responsibilities of owning property.

Down Payment Assistance Prep: Through its counseling programs and regional partnerships, the development actively positions families to qualify for down payment assistance programs—such as the City of Charlotte’s House Charlotte initiative—setting them up with financial backing when they are ready to purchase their own homes.

A Community-Wide CoalitionBuilding a project of this scale for justice-impacted individuals requires an incredible amount of political and social capital. The local government, private sector, and community have formed an intentional coalition to make it happen. They stepped in with massive capital commitments:

The City of Charlotte: Contributed $1 million in committed funding and provided a City Housing Support Grant allowing NCA to purchase the land outright with no loans against the property.

Mecklenburg County: Allocated $1.25 million to $1.75 million in committed funding to back the construction phase.

Corporate and Private PhilanthropyThe private sector has stepped up to help bridge the funding gaps. Major financial institutions like Wells Fargo have contributed early corporate grants (such as an initial $100,000 allocation) to catalyze the capital campaign. The Community Capital CampaignBecause the total budget sits at $9.1 million, NCA launched an aggressive capital campaign aiming to raise the remaining funds from the private sector, local foundations, and the Charlotte faith community. Local volunteers and advocacy groups have championed the project to prove that successful community reintegration benefits the economy and safety of Charlotte as a whole. The development is strategically located at 2135 E. WT Harris Blvd, intentionally placing residents in close proximity to UNC Charlotte, public transportation, grocery stores, and healthcare. This ensures that while families are building their financial path to homeownership, they have immediate access to the community infrastructure required to thrive.
