Friends of Oakwood Cemetery is dedicated to preserving and promoting the historic Oakwood Cemetery. They engage the community through educational programs, restoration efforts, and events that honor the legacy of those interred there.

Discover the history and beauty of Oakwood, as we amble through the darkening cemetery. We will visit the graves of a variety of our &quot;residents&quot; and learn how they lived and died. The grave of Uncle Sam, the Overlook at sunset, and a gushing waterfall are highlights. We may see or hear some of Oakwood&#39;s wildlife too! Your registration supports preservation, restoration, and public education at Oakwood. Thank you for helping us keep this historic landscape welcoming and accessible for all who visit. 🕯️

Twilight Cemetery Tour

Join us for a kid-friendly scavenger hunt through historic Oakwood Cemetery 🕵️&zwj;♂️🌳 Kids will explore the grounds, search for unique monuments, symbols and gravestones. &nbsp;All kids must be accompanied by an adult. Your registration supports Friends of Oakwood Cemetery&rsquo;s mission to preserve, protect, and share this historic place. We&rsquo;ll provide clue sheets, simple instructions, and gentle guidance so families can enjoy a respectful, curious walk together. Meet at the Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel for check in.

Kids Oakwood Cemetery Scavenger Hunt

Join Oakwood Cemetery volunteer, Dan Pasqule, &nbsp;as he helps you learn about Troy and Lansingburgh&rsquo;s storied baseball past ⚾. &nbsp;We will visit some of the capital regions early and more recent sports stars, and learn how the game has changed over time. &nbsp;We will also visit the site of one of the area&rsquo;s most colorful boxer 🥊.&nbsp;Your registration supports Friends of Oakwood Cemetery in caring for the grounds, restoring markers, and keeping this historic resting place welcoming and accessible for all who visit.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We will be driving from gravesite to gravesite so please meet at theGardiner Earl and Chapel 💒 and we will parade slowly through the grounds to get to each location. &nbsp;Please drive slowly and carefully to avoid pedestrians and bikers.

Baseball and a Boxer

Step into Oakwood Cemetery at twilight&nbsp;, when stories and headstones share the same soft light. This guided evening walk reveals the lives of notable residents and the history woven through our grounds. Cast a line with us on our Children&rsquo;s Fishing Contest 🎣.&nbsp; All young anglers! Test your luck at Oakwood&rsquo;s 1st Fishing Contest. *** Children must be accompanied by an adult. Fish will be measured, recorded and then released back into the lake. Watch out for our resident snapping turtles, because they are not friendly! &nbsp; Meet at the Earl Chapel &amp; Drive to the lake. Children’s Fishing Contest

The Family Mausoleums Tour is a walking and driving tour lead by Oakwood Volunteer Terry Rooney. &nbsp;He will lead our guests on a tour of several of these opulent mausoleums, Tibbits, Tracy, Vail, Mc Conihe Thompson, Cannon, Paine, Sage, Griswold, Hart, Green. &nbsp;He will showcase their histories, the personalities and the unique architecture of these revered mausoleums.&nbsp; Meet at the Gardner Earl Chapel.

CIVIL WAR TOUR

Join us for a quiet spring bird walk 🐦🌿 through historic Oakwood Cemetery.&nbsp; All levels of birders including beginners are welcome on this easy stroll. We&rsquo;ll listen and look for colorful migrants like orioles and warblers. If you&rsquo;ve never seen a Bluebird this could be your chance! Bring binoculars &amp; wear sturdy shoes. A few loaner binoculars may be available. Clint Anglin, Naomi Jaffe and Heidi Klinowski will lead this annual rite of Spring. &nbsp;Your registration helps Friends of Oakwood Cemetery preserve the grounds, maintain habitat for wildlife, and continue offering educational programs that keep our community&rsquo;s history accessible and cared for. The Gilded Age was a time of tremendous industrialization and rapid economic growth, especially in Troy, NY. As you sip champagne at the Lookout, you'll meet some of Troy's elite who shaped our country with their ambitious visions and amassed sizable fortunes. This tour is hosted by Kathy Sheehan, who is best known as historian for the city of Troy and Rensselaer County in addition to her work with the staff of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” to find authentic 19th-century sites and buildings to film for the television series.

June Twilight Cemetery Tour with Michael Barrett

Michael Barrett, Emeritus Executive Director of the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, hosts this tour of the not-so-well-known area of the cemetery, which contains several important people and families who were instrumental in the later phase in Troy's incredible history.  Come meet educators, industrialists, inventors, brewers, and more.

North of the Lakes Tour

All levels, including beginners, are welcome on this annual Rite of Spring and easy stroll, exploring a variety of habitats, led by Heidi Klinowski, our Friends of Oakwood Volunteer and life member of the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club. We'll look for returning migrants like the Oriole and Indigo Bunting and keep an eye (and ear) out for regulars like Bluebirds, Red-Tailed Hawk, and maybe a Bald Eagle. Bring binoculars and wear sturdy shoes. A few loaner binoculars may be available. Meet at the flagpole.

The Warren Chapel, built in 1860, is a stone church built in the English-country Gothic style, designed by noted architect Henry Dudley of New York. It has a nave, cross-transept plan, lancet windows, and a recessed pointed-arch entrance with a small rosette above. Here's your chance to catch a rare glimpse inside this fascinating structure.

Ride in a charming climate controlled trolley, as local County Historian Kathy Sheehan tells amazing stories of Oakwood&#39;s most &quot;wild women&quot;. &nbsp; You&rsquo;ll hear about suffragists, philanthropists, and other famous women from 19th century Troy. &nbsp;Such as; Emma Willard, Julia Dickinson Tayloe, Julia Dickinson Tayloe Paine, Betsey Hart, Amanda Cluett, Caroline Gilkey Rogers, Estelle Rand, Beulah Baily Thull, Evanetta Hare and so many more. &nbsp;They were a force to contend with. The Trolley will board near the &nbsp;Earl Chapel. &nbsp; Please be ready to board 15 minutes before your tour starts.
