We are currently undertaking an exciting, and much needed, project to build a new playground at Miller Hill Sand Lake Elementary School in Averill Park, NY. In our rural community, where public spaces are limited, the playground will serve as both a vital school resource and a welcoming gathering place for the broader community. Miller Hill serves the largest group of elementary students in the Averill Park Central School District, yet its 20-year-old playground has deteriorated beyond repair, lacks accessible features for students with mobility challenges, and poses significant safety issues. As a Title I school representing diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, Miller Hill faces financial pressures, and decreasing state aid has limited the district's ability to invest in a new playground. As a result, community-led efforts are essential to ensure that our students have access to safe, equitable, high-quality resources.
