Dexter L Davis Jr. Memorial Fund
"We lost a brother. We are making sure that loss means something for every Black man who comes after him."Why This Fund ExistsBlack men are carrying too much alone. That ends here.We are losing Black men every day to a silent crisis. Not just to illness. To silence. To the weight of not having anywhere safe to put it down.Black men face mental health disparities that are systemic and devastating. They are less likely to seek help, less likely to have access to culturally competent care, and more likely to suffer in silence because the world was never built to hold them. The stigma is real. The barriers are real. And the consequences are real. The Dexter L. Davis Jr. Memorial Fund was created because we refuse to accept this as normal. We refuse to keep burying brothers. This fund is our answer to a problem that took someone we loved, and our commitment to making sure no family has to go through what his family went through.Key StatisticsOnly 1 in 3 Black adults who need mental health care actually receive it (NAMI; Dalencour et al., 2017, Psychiatric Services)Black adults are 36% less likely than the general population to receive mental health treatment (HHS Office of Minority Health, 2024 NSDUH)Black men die by suicide at more than 4 times the rate of Black women (CDC National Center for Health Statistics, 2022)These are not just numbers. Every statistic is someone's son, someone's brother, someone's friend. Dexter was ours. The Man Behind the MissionDexter L. Davis Jr. was not a statistic. He was a brother. My frat brother. My friend. For over two decades, Dex was the kind of man who showed up. The kind who checked in. The kind who made the room feel different when he walked in.Losing Dex taught me something I already knew but had to feel to truly understand. Black men do not always get the chance to be seen in their full humanity. We are expected to be strong. To push through. To handle it. But handling it alone is what gets brothers killed. What keeps them from getting help. What keeps them suffering in silence when they deserve so much more than silence. The Dexter L. Davis Jr. Memorial Fund is not about grief. It is about action. It is Dex's name on something that will outlast all of us. Every dollar raised, every brother reached, every safe space created in his honor, that is his legacy living forward. How the Fund WorksThe fund operates through the Getting My Cheese Back On My Cracker Foundation (EIN: 87-1861518), guided by our three core pillars:Safety — Creating safe spaces where Black men can speak freely, be heard, and leave feeling less alone than when they walked in.Knowledge — Connecting Black men to culturally competent mental health professionals who understand their experience, history, and needs without judgment.Advocacy — Reducing stigma through education, storytelling, and community advocacy while sustaining the Roundtable Discussion events that carry Dexter's name forward. The Movement Behind the FundEvery Black Men's Mental Health Roundtable Discussion is a fundraiser for this fund. Every city we enter, every table we sit at, every conversation we have is in Dexter's name. The Roundtable Discussions are a city-to-city brotherhood and wellness dinner experience hosted at Black-owned restaurants. We eat together. We talk together. We heal together. And we raise money to make sure more brothers can access the help they need.DonateWhen you give to the Dexter L. Davis Jr. Memorial Fund, you are not just making a donation. You are investing in a brother's life saved, a conversation finally had, a burden finally shared. You are honoring a man who deserved the same access he never got. And you are making sure the next brother has it.The Getting My Cheese Back On My Cracker Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. EIN: 87-1861518. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
