Imagine being a child with a painful cavity&mdash;and knowing your family simply cannot afford to take you to a dentist. Years ago, I was spending time in a small community in the Philippines and became close to a group of children. I asked what basic things they needed. Their answers stopped me:Body soap. A toothbrush. Toothpaste. Some were brushing their teeth with salt because toothpaste was a luxury. They had never been to a dentist. Then one boy finally told me he was in severe pain. I took him to a small dental clinic, where we discovered he had more than 15 cavities. I will never forget that experience, says Amy Muranko recalling the situation. For many families living in poverty, a filling costs more than pulling a tooth. Children can live with decay and pain until they simply cannot endure it anymore. That is why Davao Smiles matters so much to us. On October 10&ndash;11, 2026, Global Impact, Urbidontics, and the University of Utah (Asia Campus) are partnering to bring quality dental care to underserved children in Davao. Our dental team includes Dr. Gammy Urbi, a highly respected Filipino dentist who lectures internationally, his dentists and staff, along with skilled volunteer dentists traveling from Korea to donate their time and expertise. They will provide both basic dental treatment and care for more complex cases. But this mission goes even further and incorporates education with health care. Our goal is to reduce vulnerability and empower children and families. While children and their guardians wait for treatment, they will receive dental-health education and child-safety briefings to reduce the possibility of abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. Children will also receive care packs with dental supplies, toys, devotionals, and other resources. We want each child to leave not only healthier, but also more informed, confident, and valued. September 1st marked the sixth consecutive day of heavy Russian attacks on Kiev and the southern Odesa region, striking civilian infrastructure and residential areas. The ongoing attacks on logistics centers, distribution networks and supplier warehouses are affecting communities across Ukraine. In the region where Living Pearl Children&#39;s Home&nbsp;is located, supplies on store shelves are dwindling quickly with a difficult winter ahead being predicted.
