Join us as Grace and St Paul&#39;s Church presents War and Peace,&nbsp;a 2-Piano Recital by Duo Mesa Wine reception to follow Rooted in the legendary Russian piano tradition of Heinrich Neuhaus, Duo Mesa brings together virtuoso Sergei Glavatskih (Moscow Conservatory professor and teacher of major competition winners, including Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko) and award-winning American pianist and tonebase Piano Events Director Noah Alden Hardaway for&nbsp;War and Peace, a sweeping two-piano recital. The program moves from Holst&rsquo;s martial Mars, the Bringer of War and Stravinsky&rsquo;s crystalline neoclassicism to Copland&rsquo;s American frontier and Liszt&rsquo;s brilliant transcription of the finale of Beethoven&rsquo;s Ninth Symphony &ndash;&ndash; and its transcendent appeal for universal peace. Join us on June 13, 2026 for a night of timeless beauty with the Kestrel Trio,&nbsp;featuring Vibha&nbsp;Janakiraman, violin, Kyle Pinzon, cello, and Alex Nam, piano. Formed on musical relationships that date over 8 years old, Kestrel Trio is unified in their constant exploration of the endless possibilities music can hold. These 3 emerging artists present a night blending the old with the new, pairing Reena Esmail&rsquo;s Saans and Schubert&rsquo;s monumental Piano Trio in Eb. Translated to &ldquo;Breath,&rdquo; Reena Esmail&rsquo;s Saans uses the classical form of the piano trio to explore traditions of Hindustani classical music. Written for and dedicated to her dear friend, Saans evokes conversation between all 3 instruments by imitating a slow, meditative intake and release of breath.&nbsp; Schubert composed the second of his piano trios in November 1827, the same month as he completed the great song-cycle Winterreise and nine months after the death of Beethoven in March 1827. This epic chamber work was, in fact, given one of its earliest performances at a concert by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna on 26 March on the anniversary of Beethoven&rsquo;s death &ndash; one of the few occasions during Schubert&rsquo;s lifetime when he enjoyed a major public success. Sadly this was not destined to last: the next known performance of the Trio was in January 1829, at a memorial concert for Schubert, who had died in November 1828. Just when Schubert&rsquo;s music was at risk of slipping into neglect, it was Robert Schumann &ndash; an immensely perceptive critic as well as a composer of genius &ndash; who most regularly drew attention to the finest of Schubert&rsquo;s chamber works. Schumann numbered this E flat Trio among the very greatest, describing it as his &lsquo;last and most individual work of chamber music&rsquo; and comparing it with the more genial Trio in B flat major. Schumann wrote that the E flat Trio, which appeared in print just days before Schubert&rsquo;s death, has travelled &lsquo;across the ordinary musical life of the day like an angry thunderstorm &hellip; inspired by deep indignation and boundless longing &hellip; spirited, masculine and dramatic.&rsquo;

&ldquo;Embers &amp; Elegance&rdquo;An Evening with The Firebird Quartet November 9, 2026, Monday&nbsp;7:30 PM Grace &amp; St. Paul&#39;s Church,123 W 71st St.&nbsp;New York, NY 10023 There&#39;s a violin in this concert with its own story older than the country it lives in.&nbsp; Jennifer Choi will walk on stage carrying the 1718 &quot;Firebird&quot; Stradivarius &mdash; a three-hundred-year-old instrument, on permanent loan to her, whose voice has been shaped by three centuries of hands, rooms, and music before it ever reaches yours. &nbsp;You are not just hearing a concert.&nbsp;You&#39;re hearing an object that has outlived empires, still singing. She won&#39;t be alone. Joining her is a quartet built from some of the most decorated chamber musicians working in New York today:&nbsp; Derek Wieland, a Juilliard-trained pianist who spent years as Music Director of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and has shared stages with the Cleveland Orchestra and Al Di Meola;&nbsp; Conway Kuo, Associate Principal Second Violin of the New York City Ballet Orchestra, who trained under legends like Arnold Steinhardt and Jascha Brodsky;&nbsp; Michael Cant&uacute;, a Fulbright and Sphinx-Prize-winning cellist who has played Carnegie Hall, Berlin&#39;s Konzerthaus, and Hamburg&#39;s Elbphilharmonie.&nbsp; These aren&#39;t local players doing a favor &mdash; this is a world-class ensemble assembling for one night. The program is a journey, not just a setlist: - Mozart&#39;s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor** opens the night &mdash; dark, urgent, and startlingly modern for 1785; a piece that shocked its first publishers with how serious chamber music could be.-&nbsp; -Britten&#39;s Cello Sonata** turns the spotlight to a single dialogue between cello and piano &mdash; intimate, spiky, unexpectedly playful in its pizzicato scherzo.-&nbsp; Shostakovich&#39;s Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano** is pure color and wit &mdash; a waltz, a polka, an elegy &mdash; showing the lighter, sly side of a composer usually known for his weight.- Faur&eacute;&#39;s Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor** &mdash; lush, Romantic, sweeping &mdash; one of the great masterworks of French chamber music, built to end a night on a high. It all happens inside the sanctuary at Grace &amp; St. Paul&#39;s Church, a historic, acoustically rich space on the Upper West Side that turns a concert into something closer to a communal, candlelit experience &mdash; no arena distance, no cheap seats. You&#39;ll be close enough to watch bow hairs move. And because the evening is being professionally video recorded, this isn&#39;t a performance that disappears the moment it ends &mdash; you&#39;re witnessing something that will exist as a document afterward, which is its own kind of reason to be there in person, in the room, first. THAT&#39;S NOT TANGO ASTOR PIAZZOLLA, A LIFE IN MUSIC &quot;Music is more than a woman, you can divorce a woman...&quot; Astor Piazzolla Astor Piazzolla - the man who revolutionized 20th century music with his Nuevo Tango - was as complex and unforgettable as his melodies.&nbsp;Piazzolla&#39;s personal story is the stuff of novels: a mix of brutality, innocence, defiance, triumph and loss. His childhood did not destine him to become an artist. He hung out with hoodlums and was kicked out of school for fighting. He knew firsthand the violence and cruelty of life growing up on the mean streets of New York&#39;s Lower East Side in the 1920s and &#39;30s.&nbsp;But surprising musical encounters sparked a fever in him. Bach played by a protege of Rachmaninoff&#39;s filtering from another apartment in his tenement. Klezmer emanating from the synagogue next door. Jazz pouring out of the clubs in Harlem. And, from the scratchy records his father played... tango. He inhaled it all.&nbsp;In the end, this wild child grew up to be the most interpreted composer in the world. En route, he encountered an array of musical greats, Artur Rubinstein, Alberto Ginastera, Anibal Troilo, even Carlos Gardel, each of whom pushed him to the next level, culminating with the legendary Nadia Boulanger who urged him on to his true calling: the radical reinvention of tango.&nbsp;Today, his music is performed across the globe by the finest classical, jazz and tango performers in the world. But who was Astor Piazzolla? &nbsp;Conceived by <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.thatsnottango.com/creative-team" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_self">Lesley Karsten</a> and written by Karsten and <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.thatsnottango.com/creative-team" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_self">Stephen Wadsworth</a>, the production is directed by <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.thatsnottango.com/creative-team" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_self">Sarah Meyers</a>. That&#39;s Not Tango features Karsten as Piazzolla.
