“Forbidden Music of Salamone Rossi” explores the radical vision of a Renaissance Jewish composer who brought polyphony into Hebrew sacred music for the first time. A court musician in Italy, Rossi wrote alongside Catholic contemporaries while challenging long-held Jewish liturgical traditions. Framed by music of his contemporaries, Monteverdi and Palestrina, as well as modern Jewish choral works, this program illuminates a bold moment of tension between tradition, innovation, and faith.Te Deum: Forbidden Music

A Baroque Christmas At the Cathedral

Join us for the Great Spaces. The presentation by Te-Deum is Heinrich Schütz’s St. Matthew Passion in a newly commissioned English translation by musicologist and Baroque specialist Chester Alwes. Written late in Schütz’s life amid the devastation of the Thirty Years’ War, the work’s striking austerity reflects a world marked by loss, scarcity, and moral exhaustion, where meaning is carried by words rather than spectacle. Sung without instruments and shaped by clarity of text, the Passion offers a restrained yet deeply human telling of the story, one that speaks with renewed force in times of uncertainty and division.
