Folklore Friday invites you to join us around a fire as early American historian and museum professional, MacLaren M. Remy, tells the story of The Pup in the Pit: Wolves, Anxiety, and the Natural World in Colonial Delaware. She explores the history of wolf hunting in colonial Delaware, from Edmund Cantwell’s efforts to control wolves to the use of wolf pits throughout the colony. More than simply a story of predator control, it asks where these anxieties about wolves came from and what they reveal about how early Anglo-Delawareans understood the natural world around them. Reserve your spot to connect with the people and stories that keep this history alive 🌿.

Maker's Market

Throughout American history, as settlers moved westward from the East, many of the innovations and traditions that became hallmarks of the American frontier were first developed or refined here in the Delmarva region. Among them were log cabins, Conestoga wagons, the long rifle, itinerant preachers, also known as circuit riders, and DuPont gunpowder. The region also produced remarkable artists such as George Catlin, Frank Schoonover, and N.C. Wyeth, whose work helped shape and preserve the imagery, legends, and spirit of the American West. Join Steve Renzi as they explore Delmarva's surprising influence on the settlement, culture, and mythology of the American West and discover how our region helped shape the story of how the "West Was Won." This lecture supports our work to preserve and interpret local industrial and agricultural history. Your registration helps keep our grist mill, textile factory, and heritage farm open for curious minds today and tomorrow. 🌾
