Join us for an afternoon with Local Historian&rsquo;s Doug Perks and David Gilbert for the launch of their new publications, Charles Washington&rsquo;s Town and Millwrights and Entrepreneurs: 240 Years of Water Power at Harpers Ferry. In his &ldquo;Charles Town boy&rdquo; voice, Jefferson County Historian Doug Perks takes you on a tour of his beloved hometown, visiting the people, places, and stories that made this place a unique station in American history. With over 100 historic photos, images, and maps, Charles Washington&rsquo;s Town presents a well-balanced mix of history and nostalgia that celebrates Mainstreet, USA, and proves that small towns have the biggest hearts. Twenty-six years after publishing Waterpower, an in-depth narrative of the mills, factories, and floods at Harpers Ferry, author David Gilbert has produced an updated, expanded, and beautifully illustrated new exploration of this important part of the town&rsquo;s history: Millwrights and Entrepreneurs: 240 Years of Water Power at Harpers Ferry, 1751 - 1991 (HFPA, 2025).&nbsp; Following the Author Talks there will be a Q&amp;A and Book Signings.

Its author, Joseph Barry, escaped the Irish Famine to find the American Dream. But reality found him in the crosshairs of abolitionist crusaders, trapped in a border town during civil war, fighting famine in a broken country, and witnessing historic floods. Fortunately for historians, he lived to tell the tale. But what brought Barry to Harpers Ferry? Why did he stay? And can he be considered a reliable narrator of Harpers Ferry&#39;s history?&nbsp; Catherine Baldau is the Executive Director of the Harpers Ferry Park Association, where she has edited several publications including the award-winning Harpers Ferry Under Fire. Her essays are published in the Harpers Ferry Anthology and &ldquo;To Emancipate the Mind and Soul&rdquo;: Storer College 1867-1955. Catherine&#39;s freelance writing has been featured in Fluent Magazine and other local publications. Her first novel, Thoughts &amp; Prayers, co-authored with three local writers, won the 2022 Florida Authors and Publishers award for fiction. Brick by Brick: Kate Field and the Rescue of John Brown’s Fort

In the years following the Civil War, many of the four million people freed by the 13th Amendment longed for two things: to reunite with family and to gain an education. A small school founded in 1865 in Harpers Ferry helped with the latter by providing an education to formerly enslaved men and women. For 25 years, Storer College stood as the only institution in West Virginia where people of color could pursue education beyond the primary level. Guided by its motto, Labor Omnia Vincit (Work Conquers All), Storer College became a place where teachers, students, and reformers strove to manifest a new world on the &quot;hill of hope.&quot; This program explores the tales of courage and conviction, success and defeat, controversy, and, above all, hope. What's In Your Attic?

Enjoy hiking in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and town during the annual Olde Tyme Christmas Festival. We will walk along the Shenandoah on Virginius Island before climbing a little piece of the Appalachian Trail on the flank of Camp Hill. Expect wintertime expansive and rocky views and possibly some wildlife. We&rsquo;ll also view some history along the way: ruins of mills that once bustled along the Shenandoah, Jefferson Rock and Robert Harper&rsquo;s house. Ending the walk in the town business district, you can enjoy some of the special programs of Harpers Ferry and Bolivar&#39;s annual festival. Led by Certified Park Guide Chris Craig, a regular hike leader for the Sierra Club, this 2.5-mile hike is rated MODERATE to STRENUOUS. The route includes earthen and rocky trails, some flat, others with short steep climbs and challenging footing. Some may find hiking poles or walking sticks to be helpful. Participants should meet at the Benches on the Green across from the Park Bookshop. Don&rsquo;t forget to bring some water!

Spies of Harpers Ferry | History on Tap

CANCELLED DUE TO LOW REGISTRATION This tough hike is for braggin&rsquo; rights, folks!&nbsp;We&rsquo;ll start on the C&amp;O side of the trestle footbridge in Maryland and walk the AT to the Southern border of Harpers Ferry NHP. Just beyond the border, we&rsquo;ll set foot in Virginia before starting our descent back to the park. Along the way we&rsquo;ll talk some history, some nature and some trivia. Led by volunteers Dave Cahan, a seasoned hiker who&rsquo;s familiar with Harpers Ferry&#39;s 20 miles of trails, and Pam Hayba, this approximately 7-mile hike is rated MODERATE to STRENUOUS, with an approximately 1200 ft elevation gain and areas of uneven rocky and muddy footing. Long pants are recommended due to poison ivy in the area. Participants will meet at the Point in Lower Town, Harpers Ferry. Don&rsquo;t forget to bring lunch (or snacks) and water!

Appalachian Trail Slight Thru Hike

The Appalachian Trail runs just under 2200 miles from Georgia to Maine. The C&amp;O Canal Towpath is 184.5 miles from Cumberland to Washington, DC. Just outside Harpers Ferry, these two trails run concurrently for around three miles. We will walk those three miles from Weverton, Maryland to Harpers Ferry, passing river rapids, historic railroad lines and bridges, and notable viewsheds. We&rsquo;ll share some history along the way and also enjoy some late autumn views of the Potomac River. Led by Certified Park Guide Chris Craig, a regular hike leader for the Sierra Club, this 3.5-mile hike is rated EASY, though you must be able to walk the distance on unpaved trails. Other than the endpoints, this route will be on level chat surfaces.&nbsp; Participants should meet at Harpers Ferry NHP Visitor Center, from where we will shuttle with <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.rivertrail.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">River &amp; Trail Outfitters</a> to the hike start. Dogs will not be allowed on the shuttle ride. At the end of the hike in Harpers Ferry, participants may ride the park shuttle back to the Visitor Center or have some lunch at one of the town restaurants. Don&rsquo;t forget to bring water and perhaps a snack!

Two Great Trails into a Great Town – Weverton to Harpers Ferry

Irish immigrant Joseph Barry could be called the Forrest Gump of 19th-century Harpers Ferry. In his book The Strange Story of Harpers Ferry, first published in 1903, he gives first-person accounts of John Brown&rsquo;s Raid, the Civil War, and historic floods. This lantern tour will relay some of his most colorful, tragic, and strange tales. Led by Cathy Baldau, executive director of the Harpers Ferry Park Association, this hike is rated EASY and offers an engaging journey through history. The route includes uneven sidewalks, grassy areas, and paths. Cathy brings a wealth of knowledge to the tour; in her previous position as publications specialist, she edited and managed the production of eight books on the history of Harpers Ferry. Participants should park and meet at the Train Station. Please allow extra time to find parking, as the Train Station lot may fill up quickly&mdash;October evenings are especially busy in Harpers Ferry. Don&rsquo;t forget to bring a flashlight or lantern to light your way!

Lantern Tour: Strange Story of Harpers Ferry

On the 166th anniversary of John Brown&rsquo;s &ldquo;Harpers Ferry Invasion,&rdquo; this tour brings to life the landscape of a dramatic event in the Harpers Ferry story. Add lesser-known trails and perspectives to the well-known headlines of this pivotal event in American history. Our guide, David Fox, served as an interpretive park ranger at Harpers Ferry for 30 years, retiring in 2018. He is interested in everything the park has to offer but especially John Brown&rsquo;s raid, African American history and the intersection of natural and cultural history. This 2-mile hike will cover Lower Town Harpers Ferry, Virginius and Halls islands, with uneven steps and tripping hazards. Participants should meet at the Benches on the Green across from the Park Bookshop.

Storer College History Tour

Join us in finding and sampling some Pawpaws at Harpers Ferry. This hike will introduce you to the Paw Paw and enable you to find them elsewhere in the park and beyond. Led by volunteer Dave Cahan, a seasoned hiker who&rsquo;s familiar with Harpers Ferry&#39;s 20 miles of trails, this 2-mile hike is rated EASY to MODERATE, with a 100 ft elevation gain, with areas of uneven rocky and muddy footing. Long pants are recommended due to poison ivy in the area. Participants should meet at the Point in Lower Town, Harpers Ferry.

Paw Paw Hike

Discover the Park after Dark!&nbsp; Join us for an evening under the stars as we explore the importance of dark night skies. Enjoy a guest presentation, participate in fun activities for kids, and end the evening stargazing through telescopes or with the naked eye! At 6:00 PM, join lunar geologist Dr. Zachary Morse for a night sky presentation on the second floor of the former Anthony Hall. Head to Murphy-Chambers Farm anytime from dusk - 10:00 PM for stargazing with the TriState Astronomers in collaboration with Harpers Ferry National Historical Park! Bring a lawn chair or blanket and dress for cool mountain nights. Please note that pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted. Parking is limited&mdash;registration and carpooling are encouraged. *The outdoor stargazing portion of this program is weather dependent and subject to cancellation on short notice.

Where They Lived: Tour of Armory Worker Houses

Explore the rich stories of our historic town and gain a deeper appreciation of Harpers Ferry&rsquo;s place in the nation&rsquo;s story during our History on Tap series. Step into the warm, inviting ambiance of Alstadts Ale House and immerse yourself in engaging discussions on a range of fascinating history. On January 18, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson sent a message to Congress requesting an expedition to explore the West. He viewed this journey as an economic and diplomatic opportunity, believing it could open profitable American trade opportunities with various Native American tribes and expand the young nation&rsquo;s reach. To lead this undertaking, Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis. But before the expedition could set out, Lewis came to Harpers Ferry &nbsp;for guns and hardware that would meet the unique requirements of his transcontinental expedition. This program explores the tools forged in Harpers Ferry, how they were used on the expedition, and the role this small town played in the larger story of America&rsquo;s westward expansion. Come for the history and stay for the camaraderie, with delicious food, handcrafted cocktails, and a selection of beer and wine available for purchase. America&rsquo;s natural landscapes have shaped human experience and national identity across the country&rsquo;s 250-year history. &nbsp;During this two-part program, take a one-mile walk through Virginia bluebells and other spring wildflowers on Virginius Island with a park biologist . After learning more about how the National Park Service protects and preserves native plants in parks, join author Nancy Lawson (The Humane Gardener, Wildscape) as she illustrates how you can use native plants to add beauty, solve problems, and create habitat in your own yard. One-mile, mostly level walk on park trails through spring wildflowers. 2:00 PM | How to (Gently) Fight Plants with Plants: Enlisting vigorous native plants to reclaim habitat. Author Nancy Lawson. What&rsquo;s to love about native plants that grow &ldquo;like weeds&rdquo;? Everything! Many species valuable to birds, bees and other wildlife lie dormant in the seedbank, just waiting to escape the mower and sprout. In this presentation, we&rsquo;ll discuss how to recruit these hardy troopers to help reclaim habitat. We&rsquo;ll also explore strategies for removing problematic nonnatives without harming wildlife and their habitats in the process. We&rsquo;ll learn about many native groundcovers, shrubs, wildflowers, vines and trees that can help hold ground, as well as methods of gradual replacement that eventually shift the balance toward more wildlife-friendly, native-plant-filled habitats.&nbsp;

In Bloom: Celebrating America’s Natural Heritage

This program is subject to cancellation based on the activity of the birds of prey in Harpers Ferry. This will be determined by Friday, April 10th. The rolling mountains of the Blue Ridge and the rushing waters of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers surrounding this historic town have shaped the landscape for generations. High above it, some of its most powerful inhabitants command the skies. Experience the thrill of nature up close on this 1.5-mile guided hike through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park as we explore the nesting and hunting behaviors of two iconic raptors: the Bald Eagle, a national symbol since 1782, and the Peregrine Falcon, a remarkable conservation success story. With a bit of luck, you may even catch a glimpse of these powerful raptors perched on the cliffs or soaring above the rivers. Participants should meet at the Point in Lower Town, Harpers Ferry. Don&rsquo;t forget to bring your binoculars, spotting scopes, or a camera with a telephoto lens. This adventure promises a deeper appreciation for these magnificent birds and the natural world they call home.

Birds of Prey Hike

Maryland Heights rises steep and rugged above Harpers Ferry, its cliffs layered with Civil War history. During the war, the strategic value of this high ground could not be overstated. Whoever held Maryland Heights controlled the town below&mdash;and the fate of the surrounding region. In 1862 during a visit to Harpers Ferry, Abe Lincoln wanted to inspect the stone fort on top of Maryland Heights but wasn&rsquo;t able to make it all the way up&hellip;can you? We&rsquo;ll pass three Union gun sites and beautiful overlooks before reaching the fort at the top of Maryland Heights. Along the way we&rsquo;ll see bald eagle nests and other native and exotic species.&nbsp; Come prepared with proper footwear, plenty of water, and a lunch or snack to eat at the top. This hike is 7+ miles, rated Difficult to Strenuous, has a 1000ft elevation gain, and steep walking on dirt roads and trails. Meet at the Point in Lower Town, Harpers Ferry.
