Before she retired, Lesley was Superintendent of Horticultural Education at the Morris County Park Commission, where she oversaw education at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Willowwood Arboretum, and the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center. More than 2 months later, the baby was found dead alongside the road near the Lindbergh home. Police eventually arrested Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a German-born carpenter from New York City. Hauptmann&#39;s subsequent trial, dubbed the Trial of the Century, resulted in his conviction and execution. The crime and trial have fascinated historians for the past 90 years. Debate over his guilt and conspiracy theories abounds. The inhabitants of Mahwah, like all their fellow citizens of Bergen County, were uneasy about these visitors. Long-time enemies, the French had become America&rsquo;s allies in 1778. But New Jerseyans knew little about the French or how they would behave. Conversely the French soldiers marching into Mahwah knew just as little about what awaited them in New Jersey. He was the target of a 145 page FBI investigation suspecting Schiphorst of being a Nazi agent/spy. For over a decade, Calaski has used his law enforcement background to examine the investigation into Shiphorst and other Bund members.
