Cosmic Horizons takes you on an exciting musical space adventure, bringing together famous movie themes, orchestral classics, and energetic band music. We blast off with the powerful, dramatic drive of Holst&rsquo;s &quot;Mars&quot; before soaring into galaxy-faring nostalgia with the iconic Theme from Star Trek. John Mackey&rsquo;s Sheltering Sky brings a serene pause to the journey, picturing the beautiful view of Earth from space.The adventure continues with the heroic drive of Chandler Wilson&rsquo;s Legends of the Galaxy and wraps up with Frank Ticheli&rsquo;s sweeping masterpiece, Over the Moon. It is an unforgettable evening of music guaranteed to have you looking up at the night sky in wonder.

Cosmic Horizons

Our annual holiday concert&nbsp;brings everyone together to celebrate the festive joy, warmth, and togetherness of the winter season. The music opens with the grand splendor of Joaqu&iacute;n Turina&rsquo;s La Procession du Rocio and the peaceful, intimate beauty of Morten Lauridsen&rsquo;s O Magnum Mysterium. We then highlight rich cultural celebrations with David Marshall&rsquo;s Hanukkah Holiday and Sean O&#39;Loughlin&rsquo;s Kwanzaa tribute, Imani. The energy ramps up with the spicy beats of Erik Morales&rsquo; We Wish You a Mambo Christmas and Julie Giroux&rsquo;s clever mashup Christmas and Sousa Forever. We wrap up the afternoon with the cheerful sleigh bells and catchy warmth of Leroy Anderson&rsquo;s all-time classic, Sleigh Ride.

Sounds of the Season

Reclaiming Space is an inspiring celebration of identity, resilience, and triumph, honoring heroes who stood tall to make their voices heard. The concert launches with Omar Thomas&rsquo; explosive, disco-fueled work A Mother of a Revolution!, honoring the brave trans women of color who sparked the Stonewall Riots. The mood shifts to warm reflection in Chris Pilsner&rsquo;s Dum Spiro Spero, followed by the uplifting message of unity in John Philip Sousa&rsquo;s march Hands Across the Sea. The second half brings high-energy jazz rhythms in Robert Lowden&rsquo;s Dixieland Jam and reaches its climax in Valerie Coleman&rsquo;s Roma, a rich tribute to the heritage and strength of Romani women. It is a powerful, joy-filled program about standing proud and taking center stage.

Reclaiming Space

Our season finale, Under the Same Breath, celebrates how music and storytelling bring us all together through the simple act of breath, the spark for both spoken words and wind instruments. The performance begins with a live Spoken Word feature by our Fairfax County Poet Laureate, Angelique Palmer, opening the door for Alfred Reed&rsquo;s joyful classic The Hounds of Spring and Helen May Butler&rsquo;s historic march Cosmopolitan America. The music keeps building with Chandler Wilson&rsquo;s lively Conversations and hits its peak with Will Healy&rsquo;s genre-bending work Noctuary for Ade, which mixes classical music, hip hop, and spoken word into a vibrant living story. It is an inspiring finale celebrating the art of storytelling shared in one room.
