The National Foundation for Certified Professional Midwives advocates for midwifery care and birth center access, ensuring families receive safe, respectful maternity care. They work to influence Medicaid policies and protect midwives' roles in healthcare.

Your gift helps protect midwifery care and birth center access for families across the country. Together, we support Certified Professional Midwives as they work for safer, more respectful pregnancy and birth care. 🤱🏽 We are raising funds to support a landmark legal effort that could establish an important precedent requiring state Medicaid programs to follow the Affordable Care Act&#39;s birth center and midwifery provisions. Congress created these federal protections to ensure Medicaid covers prenatal, labor and birth, and postpartum services provided by licensed birth centers and their state acknowledged providers. This includes CPMs, CNMs, CMs, and NDs in states where they are legally allowed. In Oregon, a group of six families are asking the Oregon Supreme Court to enforce the Affordable Care Acts requirement that state Medicaid agencies reliably cover Birth center services. This case reaches far beyond Oregon. Because the Affordable Care Act applies nationwide, the Court&#39;s interpretation could influence how Medicaid programs across the country understand and implement these federal requirements, affecting meaningful access to community-based maternity care for countless families. Recognizing the transformational power of concordant care, the impact of limited access for Black and Indigenous people to CPM care, and the acute lack of diversity in the CPM workforce, NACPM invests in the systemic changes and the direct student aid needed to open pathways for more Black and Indigenous midwives to enter the profession and opportunities for them to build and sustain their midwifery practices.&nbsp; The National Foundation for Certified Professional Midwives is pleased to uplift the&nbsp;Tanya Khemet Taiwo Midwifery Student Scholarship Fund, an initiative to grow the number of Black and Indigenous midwives in the CPM workforce.&nbsp; This fund which was created in 2022 is a celebration of the legacy of Dr. Tanya Khemet Taiwo, as the longest-serving Black Midwife on NACPM&rsquo;s Board of Directors, as well as an exemplary community health innovator, epidemiologist, researcher, and midwifery educator. Tanya, who comes from a family tradition of midwives with a commitment to bringing the midwifery model of care to the medically underserved and those most at risk for poor birth outcomes. &nbsp; The Tanya Khemet Taiwo Midwifery Student Scholarship Fund provides support for tuition and related educational expenses to second and third year Black and Indigenous midwifery students enrolled in programs accredited by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC).
