In this piece, I braid a 3 foot hair extension on my head as I share transphobic acts I've faced in Texas as the audience calls and responds with a hell know underscored to the music "Redneck Woman" By Gretchen Wilson. The piece ends with me singing the chorus of this song and leading willing audience members in a absolute beginner country line dance. The second half of this work is set to a historical Queer Folk Artist Meg Christian titled "Southern Home". This final performance will not include a post-show talkback.

Guest Artists Each performance will feature guest artists, with a different lineup at every venue. Darshita Jain: This piece is about hair triggers. Being the only person in my family/household to have curls I am just now still learning to style them, live with them and not freak out about my curls. This spoken word piece will be talking about the act of finding hair in all parts of the curves of my body. Elbow, back of knee, butt cheeks, they are everywhere and with my history of tuberculosis and lung damage, every time I see a 3 foot hair strand, it triggers me and scares me. The piece will encompass the stigma of my curls, the trauma of them falling and losing my hair when I did, and the self love / hatred they encompass and how being in this country is the first time my curls feel normal, yet the cost of it is massive. Darshita Jain is a Chicago-based poet, art critic, an arts administrator and a voracious consumer of content, matched only by her need to critically converse about the said content. Her work takes the shape of exhibition direction, art journalism, writing, performance, and non-profit arts administration. Darshita serves as a Board member at the Chicago Poetry Center. Ivy McPherson: I will be reading a creative nonfiction essay about being 14 and unable to come out as trans, while searching for external support from both the vying forces of my parents and my best friend at the time, which eventually culminates into a breaking point for everyone. Ivy McPherson is a playwright, essayist, poet and musician from St. Louis, Missouri. Her work centers around themes of transfeminine identity, race, belonging, and queerness. Kin Ribeiro: My piece engages with the theme of hair by connecting it to relationships with different family members. I explore on the one side, fetishization from my mother's White adoptive family, and on the other side internalized texturism from my aunt on my father's Latinx side. I receive push back from both sides of the family for defying gender and beauty standards by choosing to wear my hair short. Despite the troubled nature of my family's perception of my hair, we still seek a sense of belonging and continuity, symbolized through the act of braiding hair. The piece engages with race, migration, and belonging by telling my mother's adoption story and references her and her family's straddling of the US and South Korea. The way my mother's adoptive family perceives our race is interesting both in that it idealizes our Asian features but also White-washes my mother's Korean heritage. The piece also wonders how much success at conforming to an exotic, yet White-adjacent idea of beauty was a factor of my mother belonging to this family. The piece also touches on themes of gender and queerness through its discomfort with the idea of beauty. It presents beauty as a form of control of one's gender presentation and sexuality, but also redefines beauty through the scream as an expression of grief. Kin Ribeiro is a writer based in Chicago and haunted by the DMV. They are the author of Pachakuti published by INCA Press and their work has appeared in the Allegheny Review and the Wright Side Review. Kin received the Paul Carroll Creative Writing Award for their poetry and performed their work in collaboration with Nothing Without a Company. Host Partner:Located in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood, Visceral Adventure Lounge is a multidisciplinary arts venue that hosts immersive performances, live events, exhibitions, workshops, and community programming. Blending narrative art and theatrical storytelling, Ada Cheng playfully brings her audience on a journey of self-discovery and self-love through her struggles with hair. From early memories of negotiating belonging to courageous acts of boundary-making in adulthood, Cheng uses her changing hairstyles and haircolors as milestones marking her path toward self-definition. Each cut, color, and conversation becomes a metaphor for reclaiming voice and visibility in a world eager to define her first. Kick Back with NWaC

Kick Back with NWaC Silent Auction

Help Us Make the NWaC Documentary For almost 20 years, NWaC has been making theatre in Chicago. For the past 11 years, we've been making short films, too. We've worked in apartments, parks, bars, borrowed spaces, reclaimed spaces, and wherever else we could pull something together. We've made work with artists we love, told stories we wanted to see, taken risks, broken a few rules, and figured shit out along the way. Now we're turning the camera around on ourselves. We're making a feature-length documentary about NWaC, the people who've shaped it, and the world that's shaped us. From Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI+) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) storytelling to pop culture, anarchy, activism, social change, and the cultural landscape of Chicago, this film looks at almost two decades of making art outside the box. It's about how the stories we tell reflect the world around us, challenge the status quo, and become part of the culture that shapes what comes next. We're bringing together new interviews and archival footage from NWaC's history to bring this film to life. Here's the deal: the full documentary budget is $50,000. We're kicking off with a $10,000 fundraising goal, which represents 20% of the total. The rest will come from grants, sponsorships, additional fundraising, in-kind support, and other project resources. No mystery money, no smoke and mirrors. We want to be upfront about what it takes to make this thing. The budget covers research and producing, production crew and equipment, post-production, insurance, administration, accessibility, publicity, festivals, and distribution. That means paying the people doing the work, getting the film across the finish line, and making sure it actually gets seen. Why now? Because we're here, and we're queer, so get used to it! We have nearly 20 years of immersive theatre, short films, big swings, unexpected turns, and stories worth revisiting. NWaC has grown and changed alongside the artists, communities, and cultures around us. We've made space for AANHPI+ and queer voices, taken creative risks, and kept finding new ways to make work happen. There's a lot of history here, and we're ready to put it on film. If you've seen a show, worked on a production, bought a ticket, donated, volunteered, shared a post, lent us a space, or been a part of the chaos, you're a part of this story. We're raising $10,000 to get this film started. Give $25, $50, $100, $250, or whatever works for you. Every contribution helps move the project forward. 20 years in, we're still making shit happen. This time, we're documenting it.Help us make the damn thing!

NWaC: The Documentary

In Summer 2027, Nothing Without a Company brings Aloha Fry-day, the final play in Hannah Ii-Epstein’s ALL BUSS UP IN A HI STATE: A TRILOGY OF HAWAIʻI PLAYS, to Theatre Wit for a full-performance run. Aloha Fry-day By Hannah Ii-Epstein | Directed by Rachel SlavickProduced by Anna Rose Ii-EpsteinArt by Luluka The play follows four friends gathering in the forest to mourn a friend’s death. As they spread his ashes and take hallucinogens, buried trauma surfaces, and their stories become haunted by the ghosts of the ʻāina. Beyond the stage, we’re creating space for connection, conversation, and community care. Every performance will be followed by a facilitated discussion exploring grief, trauma, substance use, suicide, and mental wellness. We’re also bringing an actor and a cultural specialist from Hawaiʻi to Chicago to foster cultural exchange and deepen connections between our communities. Through storytelling and shared dialogue, Aloha Fry-day invites audiences to engage with the complexity of Hawaiʻi beyond the tourist image and explore how culture, land, grief, and belonging shape our lives. In Summer 2027, Nothing Without a Company brings Aloha Fry-day, the final play in Hannah Ii-Epstein’s ALL BUSS UP IN A HI STATE: A TRILOGY OF HAWAIʻI PLAYS, to Theatre Wit for a full-performance run.Aloha Fry-day By Hannah Ii-Epstein | Directed by Rachel SlavickProduced by Anna Rose Ii-EpsteinArt by LulukaThe play follows four friends gathering in the forest to mourn a friend’s death. As they spread his ashes and take hallucinogens, buried trauma surfaces, and their stories become haunted by the ghosts of the ʻāina.Beyond the stage, we’re creating space for connection, conversation, and community care. Every performance will be followed by a facilitated discussion exploring grief, trauma, substance use, suicide, and mental wellness. We’re also bringing an actor and a cultural specialist from Hawaiʻi to Chicago to foster cultural exchange and deepen connections between our communities.Through storytelling and shared dialogue, Aloha Fry-day invites audiences to engage with the complexity of Hawaiʻi beyond the tourist image and explore how culture, land, grief, and belonging shape our lives.Aloha Fry-Day: Where Your Donation Goes1. Aloha Fry-day Fundraiser

Our Junior Board is entering its third cohort in 2027, and we’re raising funds to support the next generation of emerging arts leaders at Nothing Without a Company. Earlier this year, our Junior Board raised $1,663 through ticket sales, auctions, donations, raffles, and their Kick Back fundraiser. After expenses, $937 went directly toward supporting the program. Now, we’re looking ahead to 2027.The Junior Board gives emerging leaders a hands-on opportunity to participate in board meetings, join organizational committees, contribute to strategic conversations, and take on projects that directly support NWaC's Junior Board program. It’s a chance to learn by doing, while also bringing new ideas, perspectives, and energy into the organization. As we prepare for our third cohort, we’re asking our community to help us continue growing this program. Our fundraising goal is $3,000, meaning we need just over $2,000 to help provide the resources needed for the 2027 Junior Board year. If you believe in investing in emerging arts leaders and creating real opportunities for young leaders to shape the organizations they’re part of, we’d love to have you behind this cohort. Mahalo for supporting the Junior Board and the future of NWaC. 💛
