Camp Oceanlight at Point Reyes is an overnight environmental learning experience for 4th- and 5th-grade students at Point Reyes National Seashore. Participants stay at the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center, a comfortable group lodging facility nestled within the park, creating an immersive setting for learning, exploration, and community.Through hands-on activities, students discover the area's unique ecology, history, and environmental stewardship while learning through the culture and philosophy of the Coast Miwok people. The integrated curriculum weaves together science, history, environmental education, and Indigenous knowledge to foster curiosity, connection, and a sense of responsibility for the natural world.Throughout the trip, students hike coastal trails, create art using natural materials, play traditional games, and learn to use tools inspired by those of the Coast Miwok people. They also explore the philosophy of caring for resources with future generations in mind, including the concept of making decisions that benefit the next seven generations.Family participation is an essential part of the Camp Oceanlight experience. Adult chaperones play an active role by preparing meals, supporting instructional activities, accompanying students on outdoor explorations, and helping facilitate hands-on learning.
