Oral History In The Mid-atlantic Region - Ohmar

Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region (OHMAR) promotes the practice of oral history to document and resist state violence, fostering understanding and empathy through diverse narratives that reveal complex truths and empower communities.

Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region (OHMAR) and The Alexandria Oral History Center invite you to the 2026 Annual Meeting, Witnessing State Violence: Oral History and Liberatory Praxis. Events will occur at two venues in Alexandria, Virginia, the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum and Lloyd House. The conference will feature sessions on the role that oral history has in documenting and resisting state violence through witnessing and power. Dr. Elizabeth Clark-Lewis will present a keynote address. There will be a Friday, May 8 workshop led by Shilpi Malinowski on Holding Multiple Truths: How Oral Historians Can Tell A Story From All Sides. Workshop spots are limited. Workshop description:&nbsp;Oral history offers deep empathy, showing us how it feels to walk in another&#39;s shoes. But sometimes, understanding a full story requires seeing it from multiple perspectives. How can oral historians find narrators to capture the full range of experience on delicate issues like immigration, community transformation, and displacement? In this workshop, author, journalist and oral historian Shilpi Malinowski will share her process for examining the gentrification of D.C. from all sides, including the displaced, newcomers, for-profit and nonprofit developers, those who feel disrespected, and those who are unsure if they belong.&nbsp; Then, attendees will have the chance to share their projects and we will brainstorm together to develop a narrative strategy for each project, identifying potential narrators who have experienced the same issue differently.
