(jj) Johnston&nbsp;jj received the BSEE and MSEE degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA in 1975 and 1976 respectively.&nbsp; -Worked 26 years for AT&amp;T Bell Labs and its successor AT&amp;T Labs Research.&nbsp; -One of the first investigators in the field of perceptual audio coding.&nbsp; -One of the inventors and standardizers of MPEG 1/2 audio Layer 3 and MPEG-2 AAC, as well as the AT&amp;T Labs-Research PXFM (perceptual transform coding) and PAC (perceptual audio coding) and the ASPEC algorithm that provided the best audio quality in the MPEG-1 audio tests.&nbsp; -Currently working in the area of auditory perception of soundfields, electronic soundfield correction, ways to capture soundfield cues and represent them, and ways to expand the limited sense of realism available in standard audio playback for both captured and synthetic performances.&nbsp; -Mr. Johnston is an IEEE Fellow, an AES Fellow, a NJ Inventor of the Year, an AT&amp;T Technical Medalist and Standards Awardee, and a co-recipient of the IEEE Donald Fink Paper Award.&nbsp; -In 2006, he received the James L. Flanagan Signal Processing Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society&nbsp; -He presented the 2012 Heyser Lecture at the AES 133rd Convention: Audio, Radio, Acoustics and Signal Processing: the Way Forward.

but rarely used due to cost and complexity.  Audio engineers often turn to tape emulators, either hardware or software, to give them that analog sound.<p style="margin:0px 0px setup Ampex, Studer, MCI or Otari multi track will each sound very good, but they will each be different; even if optimized for the same tape.  All 4 of these brands have good to great midrange to high frequency response, but the low frequency will be different for each deck and will change between 15IPS and 30IPS.  Each will have some distortion from the vagaries of the magnetic material and its interaction with bias and heads as well as sound differences due to different circuit topologies.  <p style="margin:0px 0px dad brought home from work.  The first tape decks he worked on were Ampex 351, Ampex MR70, and a Scully 280.  Matthew provided warranty services on Ampex, MCI, Otari and Tascam decks through the 1980’s and helped implement the first digital recording systems in the Seattle area, both tape and hard disk.  He continues to provide repairs and maintenance on studio equipment in the Seattle area. This biggest change came with the replacement of the line array speakers, with high power full range speakers with FIR filter control. The new speaker system was provided by local manufacturer McCauley and the results are fantastic. Ted will give us a breakdown of the equipment and its use and discuss the challenges of mixing loud bands in small rooms, getting a quick and effective sound check done, and integrating artist equipment into your house system. He will also discuss his acoustic piano micing techniques and strategies. Ted is eager to share his 30+ years of experience in live audio and will be ready to take your questions. Jazz Alley is a fixture of the Seattle live music and dining scene, family owned and operated since 1980. For over four decades, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley has been a West Coast 'must' for all the towering figures in the world of jazz - stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Betty Carter, Eartha Kitt, Dave Brubeck and McCoy Tyner have all played there. The nightclub first opened its doors in 1980 in Seattle's University District. An intimate bistro setting, it attracted a diverse clientele. Equally popular among college students and die-hard jazz aficionados, you could always find an exciting mixture of personalities and performers.
