He&#39;s been at KEXP since before the invention of YouTube, recording sessions, producing radio spots and podcasts, and doing live sound for events.&nbsp; &nbsp; He started doing sound in the 90&#39;s at the Duke Coffeehouse in Durham, North Carolina, after bugging the man who was installing a sound system for open mics to teach him to use the board. &nbsp; That man - Charles Jones of Synergen Enterprises, eventually hired him as an assistant on live shows around North Carolina for bands like Dave Matthews, Johnny Quest, and The Spin Doctors. He moved to Seattle to attend the Art Institute&#39;s audio program. With the tutelage of Dan Mortensen, he was set loose on the unsuspecting musicians performing at the Earshot Jazz Festival. After 15 years doing FOH sound at OTB, he left when he was hired full time at KEXP in 2020. Jackson Long&nbsp; Jackson Long is Seattle-based recording engineer, drummer and Northwest music enthusiast. This is a lot of material to cover, so the presentation is split into two sessions, with a break in-between. 1:00p - Meeting begins&nbsp; Part 1 &ndash; How sound gets to the brain (at normal levels)&bull;Sound &ndash; how it&rsquo;s created and propagates&bull;Acoustics of rooms&bull;Acoustics of the head/outer ear&bull;Middle ear behavior&bull;Cochlear analysis (30 minute intermission + mingle) Part 2 &ndash; What happens after it goes down the auditory nerve?&bull;Monaural processing&bull;Masking&bull;Pre-echo&bull;Binaural processing&bull;Time correlation,&bull;Frequency correlation&bull;Masking effects&bull;Selective post processing 4:00p - Meeting concludes We hope to see you there, in-person or virtually.<p fr-original-style='font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; text-align: left; line-height: 19px; margin: 0px;' style='font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; text-align: left; line-height: 19px; margin: 0px; width: 100%; box-sizing: inherit;'> <p fr-original-style='margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: ProximaNova, "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;' id="isPasted" style='margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: ProximaNova, "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; width: 100%; line-height: 1.5; box-sizing: inherit;'><b fr-original-style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; line-height: 19px;" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; line-height: 19px; font-weight: 700; box-sizing: inherit;">About our Presenter:<p fr-original-style='margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: ProximaNova, "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;' style='margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 14px; vertical-align: baseline; background: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: ProximaNova, "Helvetica Neue", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial; width: 100%; line-height: 1.5; box-sizing: inherit;'> James D. setup Ampex, Studer, MCI or Otari multi track will each sound very good, but they will each be different; even if optimized for the same tape.  All 4 of these brands have good to great midrange to high frequency response, but the low frequency will be different for each deck and will change between 15IPS and 30IPS.  Each will have some distortion from the vagaries of the magnetic material and its interaction with bias and heads as well as sound differences due to different circuit topologies.  <p style="margin:0px 0px This biggest change came with the replacement of the line array speakers, with high power full range speakers with FIR filter control. The new speaker system was provided by local manufacturer McCauley and the results are fantastic. Ted will give us a breakdown of the equipment and its use and discuss the challenges of mixing loud bands in small rooms, getting a quick and effective sound check done, and integrating artist equipment into your house system. He will also discuss his acoustic piano micing techniques and strategies. Ted is eager to share his 30+ years of experience in live audio and will be ready to take your questions. Jazz Alley is a fixture of the Seattle live music and dining scene, family owned and operated since 1980. For over four decades, Dimitriou's Jazz Alley has been a West Coast 'must' for all the towering figures in the world of jazz - stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Betty Carter, Eartha Kitt, Dave Brubeck and McCoy Tyner have all played there. The nightclub first opened its doors in 1980 in Seattle's University District. An intimate bistro setting, it attracted a diverse clientele. Equally popular among college students and die-hard jazz aficionados, you could always find an exciting mixture of personalities and performers. Six years later Jazz Alley relocated to the larger and more accessible club downtown at 6th and Lenora, where we will be meeting; the perfect venue for introducing new fans to world class jazz music while still offering the exuberant atmosphere of the old establishment. "A world class jazz club where music and food, musicians and audience garner equal respect" (The Seattle Times) In 2016, DownBeat Magazine voted Jazz Alley as one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world. Voted "Best Jazz Club" by the Seattle Weekly and voted Best Jazz Club via King 5's Best of Western Washington poll 8 years running. We hope to see you at our September meeting.<img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1726520552/zijahpeapmmyydabr2de.png" style="width:600px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;position:relative;max-width:100%;cursor:pointer;padding:0px 1px;-webkit-user-select:none;box-sizing:inherit" /> </td></tr></tbody></table>
