Payne Hollow on the Ohio Inc preserves the legacy of Harlan and Anna Hubbard by offering guided walks through their historic homestead and the surrounding natural landscape, fostering a deep connection to the land and the Ohio River's beauty.

The Payne Hollow Docent Program is designed to welcome visitors and help interpret the natural, historical, and cultural significance of Payne Hollow on the Ohio. Docents serve as friendly hosts and interpreters of the site&mdash;introducing visitors to the story of Anna and Harlan Hubbard, the ecological landscape of Payne Hollow, and the broader connection to the Ohio River. Docents typically assist during scheduled Sunday open houses and occasional events by greeting visitors, helping orient them to the property, sharing key stories about the Hubbards and the land, and ensuring that visitors understand site guidelines and safety expectations. Docents may also choose to volunteer during periodic service workdays that support trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and stewardship of the landscape.&nbsp; All participants in the program will receive the three-volume OYO: An Ohio River Anthology. Docents who commit to serving regularly with Payne Hollow will also receive a Payne Hollow shirt and jacket. Payne Hollow Docent Program Training

Payne Hollow on the Ohio is excited to be hosting open walks on the third Sunday of each month, beginning in April. Visitors are invited to explore the landscape that Harlan and Anna Hubbard called home and learn more about their remarkable life along the Ohio River.&nbsp; REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, and there are limited spots available each date, to avoid overcrowding. Join us on these dates:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">April 19, 2026, 1-4 PM</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">May 17, 2026, 1-4 PM</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">June 21, 2026, 1-4 PM</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">July 19, 2026, 1-4 PM</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">August 16, 2026, 1-4 PM</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">September 20, 2026, 1-4 PM</li></ul>Parking is available at 361 Rodgers Road in Milton, Kentucky, where guests will be welcomed and oriented by docents before the walk down to Payne Hollow.&nbsp; The walk to Payne Hollow includes the historic Hubbard homestead as well as a glimpse of the 110 acres of forest, fields, and river landscape that shaped Harlan Hubbard&#39;s art, writing, and philosophy. By walking these trails, visitors can experience the place where Harlan and Anna created a life deeply connected to the land and to the Ohio River. Enjoy the beauty and wild character of Payne Hollow that has inspired countless visitors for generations. Here are some helpful tips for walking Payne Hollow&#39;s trails:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">The trail to Payne Hollow is close to a mile long and contains a 500 foot elevation change. There are benches along the trail for those who need a rest from the steep, rocky trail. Some visitors find trekking poles or walking sticks helpful on the trail.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes, long pants, and bug spray. We also recommend bringing your own supply of drinking water and snacks.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">There are bathroom facilities at the orientation site, 361 Rodgers Road, but there are no bathroom facilities in the Hollow.
