Plas Newydd Farm Arts Initiative

LXCL:The PN Farm Arts Initiative is a place-based, nonprofit collaborative endeavor based at Plas Newydd Farm in Ridgefield, WA. Together, we create a space where the local arts community and the general public can come together for creativity, conversation and exploration. Through a combination of workshops, short-term artists residencies and exhibitions, we delve into the stories of this place together.

Autumn is a dynamic time of change in nature, with birds migrating across the land, plants preparing for dormancy, and fungi popping up everywhere. Learn more about local ecology and how seasonal shifts affect what we observe on this relaxed walk around the farm. Rebecca Lexa, MA, OMN, WFR is a naturalist in Portland, OR. She teaches a variety of classes on regional natural history, and leads guided nature tours in the Pacific Northwest. She is also the author of The Everyday Naturalist: How to Identify Animals, Plants, and Fungi Wherever You Go (Ten Speed Press, 2025).

Bird Stories with Kate Gray We are so excited to welcome Kate Gray back for a workshop inspired by the many feathered friends that fly through the farm, as well as the birds of our imagination! What flutters, what chitters, what glides. These elusive delights, these constants, bring meaning and some measure of reassurance to our lives. We’ll write about what birds bring to a moment, our memory, our lives. No writing experience necessary. Laughter and totally positive feedback promoted. Instructor Bio: Kate Gray feels just plain grateful, to be living on the Olympic Peninsula, tending land within the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, to live with her partner and two feisty dogs, to have taught at a community college for 25 years, to have been a writing coach for 10, to have published two chapbooks, two full-length poetry books, and a novel. Best things ever? Writing with others. Teaching. Independent bookstores. Zumba. Blue Moose coffeecake.

Dive into the layers of meaning on the landscape! In this workshop, participants will spend the day at select locations on Plas Newydd Farm with poet Christopher Luna and PN Farm Arts Initiator Abby Braithwaite exploring the poetics of place. We’ll dive into the layered ways the land holds metaphor, and the ways those layers come together in a collage of words, images and meaning. We’ll read selected poems on the theme, write to prompts, and have a chance to share our writing within the group. Participants will learn about Plas Newydd Farm’s past, present and future, and will leave the day with a handful of completed poems. We’ll be getting out on the landscape for this one, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping! Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be provided. Accessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible, as well as out on the land on rugged terrain. We will work to accommodate access however we can, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! About our teacher Christopher Luna is a poet, editor, teacher, writing coach, and artist who served as the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County, WA from 2013-2017. Luna has an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. He is the co-founder, with Toni Lumbrazo Luna, of Printed Matter Vancouver, an editing service and small press for Northwest writers. He and Morgan Paige co-host the LGBTQ+ friendly, all-ages and uncensored Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic in Vancouver, WA, founded by Christopher in 2004. Christopher Luna’s books include Voracity (Lightship Press, 2022), Exchanging Wisdom: A Guide for Parents of the Autonomous (The Poetry Box, 2021 with Angelo Luna), Message from the Vessel in a Dream (Flowstone Press, 2018), Brutal Glints of Moonlight, and The Flame Is Ours: The Letters of Stan Brakhage and Michael McClure 1961-1978 (Big Bridge). Weave With Willow: Market Basket Workshop

Celebrate the solstice with us at PN Farm Arts Initiative! What started as a neighborhood celebration is turning into a community-wide event! On June 21st, we will be hosting a group costumed bike ride in Ridgefield, followed by a barbecue potluck here on the farm. You can find more info on the event page for the Flora & Fauna Solstice Celebration. In advance of that celebration, we are hosting a couple drop-in costume workshops for people who want to join the ride who would like some assistance in creating their costume—or simply want to create it in community rather than at home. The workshops are free of charge, but donations to help defray costs will be gladly accepted; we also ask that if you attend, you really do join us for the celebration on June 21st! Come share a meal and talk farm, forest and conservation. We are thrilled to be hosting the folks from Agroforestry NW the 4th weekend in May, and it’s a great excuse to bring together a tableful of people who are working close to the land here in Clark County. Families welcome. We're looking to fire up the neighborhood pizza oven. Please bring any favorite toppings and a side dish or dessert to share.

Exploring the intersection of cosmology, ecology, and spirituality We hope you’ll join us for this first-of-its-kind retreat. Portland poet Jeff Howard has become a Soup & Words regular over the past few months, and he is offering up a day that is unlike anything we have done out here. We’re pretty excited! From Jeff:The science of the past century provides startling insights into how the Earth and its intricate life systems—including our own minds—have arisen through the physical processes of the universe. Learning to dwell in the realization that we have been “knitted from the void” and are profoundly home in one of the Milky Way’s vast spiral arms means learning to see our world, our lives, our very consciousness in Deep Time. This six-hour retreat will use science, poetry, and guided meditation to explore the path from the Big Bang to the world we know today. We will consider how this perspective can inform our understanding of the mounting ecological crisis, our major social challenges, and Plas Newydd Farm itself. We’re hoping to get out on the landscape for this one, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping! A $20 materials fee is included in the ticket price. Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be provided. Please bring sack lunch and any special snacks you need (you will have access to fridge, stove and microwave if needed). This is a free event, but we welcome a donation if you are able. Ticket options below, or you can donate on the day with cash, check or card. Thanks for your support! Accessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible. We will work to accommodate access however we can, but please email arts@pnfarm.com to confirm that the space will work for you before you commit to the workshop! About our teacherJeff Howard is an interdisciplinary social scientist whose career has focused on environmental policy and technology policy. He’s also a poet and photographer whose work has been published in literary and environmental journals. Prayers of the New Earth, a collection of framed photos and poems, has been displayed in Portland, Snohomish, and Pittsburgh. As a Buddhist and activist, his creative and intellectual fascination now focuses on humanity coming to recognize its position in deep time, that is, recognize itself—body, mind, soul—as a creature of the cosmos, a creature of ecosystems, a creature of Earth. Autumn Stitching on the Farm with Nicki Eybel Back by popular demand! Last winter’s stitching event was a delight, and we’re so thrilled to welcome Nicki Eybel back to the farm for some autumn stitching! Gathered around the workshop table, participants will stitch an 8”x8” landscape with an autumn palette. Think sky, river and land (just like PN Farm!) We will spend the morning creating our backgrounds and practicing some stitches (new and/or familiar). In the afternoon we will add details to our background (sky…rain? Clouds? Sun?) River and land (trees, leaves etc) Your piece of art will be yours…abstract? Realistic? The instructor will provide examples. All levels of stitcher welcome! If you have a youngster in your life who is interested, please reach out to Abby at arts@pnfarm.com to discuss! A materials fee of $5.00 is incorporated in your ticket. There is soup. There are writing prompts. There is time to write and share, with (gentle, loving) feedback if you want it. And there is time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea, no one will be counting words produced!) Participation is capped at 12 people, so please RSVP so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing. Donations welcome to help support costs.

PNFA runs on volunteers! We want to show our love and appreciation for our current volunteers, and welcome new ones, all at the same time! On this day, we will enjoy some refreshments, visit, mingle, and, perhaps embark on a creative activity together, all while learning more about the PNFA Volunteer Program. We will walk the house and farm, go over some basic organizational logistics, and discuss different volunteer opportunities. At the end, you will have the option to sign up to volunteer at our upcoming events!

Plein Air Painting with Jef Gunn Plein Air painting is simply painting in the “open air”. That’s what we’ll do. Painting itself can be tricky, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition, simplification, color, palette, gumption, place, light and shadow, mystery. This will be quite the adventure in painting the out-of-doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. The farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We’ll cover color, composition, palette management, and keeping your cool while managing all that! The hosts are wonderful people. It’s a working farm with an arts initiative. How cool is that? If the weather changes, we’ll have studio exercises that deepen the work done outside. For instance, composition, abstract structure and color interactions. Beyond these, we could address the possibility of emotion in the painting. Instructor Bio: Jef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawai’i. He studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s, continued to paint like heck in Seattle in the 1980s, and held residencies in Barcelona (1986-7) and Paris (1988). Since the mid 1990s he has engaged in a passionate study of Asian art. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon, showing oils, encaustics, mixed media and prints at Augen Gallery (Portland), Traver Gallery (Seattle), i.e. gallery (Edison) and Cedar St. Gallery, (Honolulu). While he’s explored several approaches to abstraction, he has always also maintained a practice of painting the landscape in the open air. With a balance of humor, broad knowledge, and helpful insight, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint, while bringing to bear practical instruction through historical examples, especially of the Modern period.

Land, Water and Sky! Plein Air Painting in the Shoulder Season

Places can be so inspiring! They engage the senses, hold memories both good and challenging, and allow us to orient ourselves within physical space. In this workshop, we will observe our surroundings, engage with the land, and consider how place affects us. Then, we will attempt to capture that in words and melody. There will be several opportunities for collaboration, and an opportunity at the end to share your work (if you feel comfortable doing so)! NO SONGWRITING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Please bring:

Sack lunch

Warm layers that will work for walking outdoors in November and also being cosy indoors (e.g., raincoat, fleece, boots, socks, gloves, hat, scarf, blanket)

Any instruments you would like to use to write music

Any special writing tools and notebooks you like to use

Included / available on site:

Breakfast and light snacks throughout the day

Refrigeration and microwave for lunches

One guitar and one keyboard

Basic paper and pens/pencils

Gina DeNoble, M.S. is a vocalist and songwriter currently living in the Portland, Oregon area. Her genre is lyric-driven, soulful folk with occasional blues elements. The mood of her music could be described as dramatic, whimsical, emotional, and romantic. Having grown up a stone’s throw from Mount Rainier National Park, Gina is a dyed-in-the-wool Pacific Northwesterner! Her debut full-length album entitled Wanderer’s Paradise is currently streaming on all major platforms. The songs on the album are heavily place-based, and were written while she was traveling regularly between Washington, Canada, and Alaska.
