Plein Air with Scott Gellatly

Expressive Color in Plein Air with Scott Gellatly This two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting, with a focus on strategic color concepts to capture the light, atmosphere and emotion of the landscape. Participants will paint at diverse locations while considering the formal aspects of painting &ndash; shape, color, and edge. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions, as well as color lectures and exercises. This workshop is intended for painters working in oil or acrylic. Scott will be working with oils. Instructor Bio:Scott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was featured in the February/March 2023 issue of Plein Air Magazine. Celebrate the Solstice with the Ridgefield Community!&nbsp; We&#39;re so excited for the first annual Flora &amp; Fauna solstice celebration and costumed bike ride!&nbsp; You can join us for workshops on May 17th and 24th, or design a costume on your own! Either way, pick your favorite wild creature (trees and ferns are creatures too!) and make a wheel-friendly costume.&nbsp; We&#39;ll ride together from Ridgefield to Plas Newydd Farm, where we&#39;ll share a community potluck, local cider, &amp; live music. Flora & Fauna Solstice Celebration

Dive into the layers of meaning on the landscape! In this workshop, participants will spend the day at select locations on Plas Newydd Farm with poet Christopher Luna and PN Farm Arts Initiator Abby Braithwaite exploring the poetics of place. We&rsquo;ll dive into the layered ways the land holds metaphor, and the ways those layers come together in a collage of words, images and meaning. We&rsquo;ll read selected poems on the theme, write to prompts, and have a chance to share our writing within the group. Participants will learn about Plas Newydd Farm&rsquo;s past, present and future, and will leave the day with a handful of completed poems. We&rsquo;ll be getting out on the landscape for this one, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping!&nbsp;&nbsp;Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be provided. Accessibility Note: This workshop takes place in an historic farmhouse that is not currently wheelchair accessible, as well as out on the land on rugged terrain. About our teacher Christopher Luna is a poet, editor, teacher, writing coach, and artist who served as the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County, WA from 2013-2017. Luna has an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. He is the co-founder, with Toni Lumbrazo Luna, of Printed Matter Vancouver, an editing service and small press for Northwest writers. He and Morgan Paige co-host the LGBTQ+ friendly, all-ages and uncensored Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic in Vancouver, WA, founded by Christopher in 2004. Christopher Luna&rsquo;s books include Voracity (Lightship Press, 2022), Exchanging Wisdom: A Guide for Parents of the Autonomous (The Poetry Box, 2021 with Angelo Luna), Message from the Vessel in a Dream (Flowstone Press, 2018), Brutal Glints of Moonlight, and The Flame Is Ours: The Letters of Stan Brakhage and Michael McClure 1961-1978 (Big Bridge). In 2025 Luna received an award from Humanities Washington for his contributions to poetry and literature.

Land Collage: The Poetics Of Place

Weave a willow market basket with Ridgefield artist Robin Brady In this 2-day class you&rsquo;ll make a round, handled basket in the traditional European stake and strand style &mdash; a great foundation for your future explorations in basketry.&nbsp;We&rsquo;ll weave with a combination of cultivated and wild willows grown right here in Ridgefield and throughout the region. They come to basketry via long time devotion to crafts and skill sets that keep them a student in the practice of direct and reciprocal relationship to the living world.&nbsp; As a weaver of mixed European settler descent, they focus primarily on styles of willow basketry with roots in countries their ancestors once wove in, while being in awe of the many brilliant weaving traditions belonging to cultures near and far. Robin was first introduced to basketry by Margaret Mathewson and other weavers in her watershed lineage and is honored to continue the tradition of passing along this love of working with willow.

Weave a Willow Basket

Celebrate the solstice with us at PN Farm Arts Initiative! What started as a neighborhood celebration is turning into a community-wide event! On June 21st, we will be hosting a group costumed bike ride in Ridgefield, followed by a barbecue potluck here on the farm. You can find more info on the event page for the Flora &amp; Fauna Solstice Celebration.&nbsp; In advance of that celebration, we are hosting a couple drop-in costume workshops&nbsp;for people who want to join the ride who would like some assistance in creating their costume&mdash;or simply want to create it in community rather than at home.&nbsp;The workshops are free of charge, but &nbsp;donations to help defray costs will be gladly accepted; we also ask that if you attend, you really do join us for the celebration on June 21st! The first day of this workshop&nbsp;will focus on construction using cardboard, paper packing tape, and paper mache. Participants can come with a clear idea of what they want to make and use the materials provided or consult with the instructors for guidance on possibilities and methods for construction.&nbsp; Day two will focus on painting the finished sculptures and ensuring they can be secured to the bicycle and/or rider.&nbsp; No art experience is required! Children attending are required to have an adult with them at all times - the workshop is taking place in the Plas Newydd barn, which is part of a working farmyard. Flora & Fauna Costume Workshop

Come share a meal and talk farm, forest and conservation. We are thrilled to be hosting the folks from Agroforestry NW the 4th weekend in May, and it&rsquo;s a great excuse to bring together a tableful of people who are working close to the land here in Clark County.&nbsp; Families welcome.&nbsp; We&#39;re looking to fire up the neighborhood pizza oven. Agroforestry Potluck

Exploring the intersection of cosmology, ecology, and spirituality We hope you&rsquo;ll join us for this first-of-its-kind retreat. Portland poet Jeff Howard has become a Soup &amp; Words regular over the past few months, and he is offering up a day that is unlike anything we have done out here. We&rsquo;re pretty excited! From Jeff:The science of the past century provides startling insights into how the Earth and its intricate life systems&mdash;including our own minds&mdash;have arisen through the physical processes of the universe. Learning to dwell in the realization that we have been &ldquo;knitted from the void&rdquo; and are profoundly home in one of the Milky Way&rsquo;s vast spiral arms means learning to see our world, our lives, our very consciousness in Deep Time. This six-hour retreat will use science, poetry, and guided meditation to explore the path from the Big Bang to the world we know today. We will consider how this perspective can inform our understanding of the mounting ecological crisis, our major social challenges, and Plas Newydd Farm itself. We&rsquo;re hoping to get out on the landscape for this one, so come prepared for some all-weather tromping! A $20 materials fee is included in the ticket price.&nbsp;Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be provided. As a Buddhist and activist, his creative and intellectual fascination now focuses on humanity coming to recognize its position in&nbsp;deep time,&nbsp;that is,&nbsp;recognize itself&mdash;body, mind, soul&mdash;as a creature of the cosmos, a creature of ecosystems, a creature of Earth. PN Farm Arts Circle of Trees

There is soup. There are writing prompts. There is time to write and share, with (gentle, loving) feedback if you want it. And there is time to sit quietly and get some writing done.&nbsp; (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea, no one will be counting words produced!) Participation is capped at 12 people, so please RSVP so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing. Donations welcome to help support costs.&nbsp;

Canopy Time

Bird Stories with Kate Gray We are so excited to welcome Kate Gray back for a workshop inspired by the many feathered friends that fly through the farm, as well as the birds of our imagination!&nbsp;What flutters, what chitters, what glides. These elusive delights, these constants, bring meaning and some measure of reassurance to our lives. We&rsquo;ll write about what birds bring to a moment, our memory, our lives. No writing experience necessary. Laughter and totally positive feedback promoted. Instructor Bio: Kate Gray feels just plain grateful, to be living on the Olympic Peninsula, tending land within the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, to live with her partner and two feisty dogs, to have taught at a community college for 25 years, to have been a writing coach for 10, to have published two chapbooks, two full-length poetry books, and a novel. Best things ever? Writing with others. Teaching. Independent bookstores. Zumba. Blue Moose coffeecake.

Autumn Stitching on the Farm with Nicki Eybel Back by popular demand! Last winter&rsquo;s stitching event was a delight, and we&rsquo;re so thrilled to welcome Nicki Eybel back to the farm for some autumn stitching! Gathered around the workshop table, participants will stitch an 8&rdquo;x8&rdquo; landscape with an autumn palette. &nbsp;Think sky, river and land (just like PN Farm!) &nbsp;We will spend the morning creating our backgrounds and practicing some stitches (new and/or familiar). &nbsp;In the afternoon we will add details to our background (sky&hellip;rain? Clouds? Sun?) &nbsp;River and land (trees, leaves etc) &nbsp;Your piece of art will be yours&hellip;abstract? Realistic? &nbsp;The instructor will provide examples. Instructor Bio: Nicki is a newly retired early childhood educator. She is now an abstract &nbsp;mixed media collage artist, focused on stitching. As a member of the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild, she is active in the Handstitching Group and has enjoyed a daily stitching practice for the last 3 years. She has exhibited in local galleries and group shows. She earned her Stitching Badge as a Girl Scout long, long ago.&nbsp;

Autumn Stitching on the Farm with Nicki Eybel

Plein Air Painting with Jef Gunn Plein Air painting is simply painting in the &ldquo;open air&rdquo;. That&rsquo;s what we&rsquo;ll do.&nbsp;Painting itself can be tricky, managing a palette of colors and a canvas in response to the always moving world around us! Our focus for this workshop will be all of that. Composition, simplification, color, palette, gumption, place, light and shadow, mystery. This will be quite the adventure in painting the out-of-doors on a beautiful landscape with historic significance. The farm and its buildings sit along the confluence of the Lewis and Columbia Rivers, on land once occupied by Chinook and Cowlitz peoples. We&rsquo;ll cover color, composition, palette management, and keeping your cool while managing all that! The hosts are wonderful people. It&rsquo;s a working farm with an arts initiative. How cool is that?&nbsp; If the weather changes, we&rsquo;ll have studio exercises that deepen the work done outside. For instance, composition, abstract structure and color interactions. Beyond these, we could address the possibility of emotion in the painting.&nbsp; Instructor Bio: Jef Gunn was born in Seattle in 1955 and grew up along the West Coast from Puget Sound to southern California and Hawai&rsquo;i. He studied drawing and painting in California through the 1970s, continued to paint like heck in Seattle in the 1980s, and held residencies in Barcelona (1986-7) and Paris (1988). Since the mid 1990s he has engaged in a passionate study of Asian art. He lives and works in Portland, Oregon, showing oils, encaustics, mixed media and prints at Augen Gallery (Portland), Traver Gallery (Seattle), i.e. gallery (Edison) and Cedar St. Gallery, (Honolulu). While he&rsquo;s explored several approaches to abstraction, he has always also maintained a practice of painting the landscape in the open air.&nbsp; With a balance of humor, broad knowledge, and helpful insight, he is able to draw from each student her or his own natural way to paint, while bringing to bear practical instruction through historical examples, especially of the Modern period.
