Portland Food Forest Initiative transforms urban spaces into sustainable food forests, promoting community resilience, biodiversity, and food security through education and hands-on workshops in urban agroforestry and permaculture practices.

Urban Food Forestry WorkshopDate: Sunday, February 15th&nbsp;Time: 10:30am - 1:00pmLocation: Jean&#39;s Farm, Portland, ORJoin us for a 2-hour workshop led by Dan Sloan of <a fr-original-style="" href="http://pdxfoodforest.org" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Portland Food Forest Initiative</a>, designed for anyone interested in transforming lawns and conventional gardens into resilient, productive ecosystems.This classroom-based session will introduce participants to the principles and practices of urban food forestry, regenerative agriculture, and agroforestry with practical strategies for both beginners and experienced growers.Topics include:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="1">Converting a lawn into a thriving, productive ecosystem</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="2">Exploring different design approaches in food forestry</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="3">Fertility management strategies</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="4">Recommended plant choices for the Portland area</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="5">Integrated pest management techniques</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" value="6">Core principles of permaculture design</li></ul>Dan is a permaculture designer and educator, plant propagator, urban agroforestry advocate, fruit tree pruner, and has experience planting many and stewarding several food forests in Portland. Urban Food Forestry Workshop  @ Jean's Farm

Join Dan Sloan from Portland Food Forest Initiative for a hands-on fruit tree pruning workshop at Jean&rsquo;s Farm.We&rsquo;ll cover fruit tree structure and training systems, pruning theory, how to prune different types of trees, when to prune (and how timing affects growth and fruiting), grafting basics, and general fruit tree care, plus plenty of time for questions.If you&rsquo;ve ever felt nervous about pruning, or if you want to become more confident and skilled in caring for your fruit trees, this class is a great opportunity to significantly level up your pruning skills. Participants will get hands-on experience working with apple, pear, and medlar trees, and you&rsquo;re welcome to take home cuttings to graft onto your own trees. Walk east on Johnson Creek to the gate on the north side of the street, where Dan will meet you. From there, we&rsquo;ll walk down together to the farm and orchard.
