Roanoke Region Wild Ones

Roanoke Region Wild Ones promotes the use of native plants to restore local ecosystems. Through education and community engagement, they aim to foster biodiversity and sustainable landscapes, enhancing the natural beauty of the Roanoke region.

In &ldquo;Bringing Ecology Home,&rdquo; Mr. Montague will share how native plant communities, such as the wilder landscapes of the Piedmont, can inspire residential gardens. Using a recently submitted Wild Ones landscape plan for Greensboro, North Carolina as a case study, he will highlight key decisions, challenges, and lessons learned in applying conservation gardening principles to the home garden. Attendees will gain practical insight into how to translate these ideas into their own landscapes to create spaces that reflect place and support biodiversity. Bringing Ecology Home: Presentation by Preston Montague, Landscape Architect

🌿Join Roanoke Region Wild Ones for a hands-on visit to the Roanoke College Environmental Center.&nbsp;Dr. Rachel Collins will show us firsthand which native plant species have thrived, what the ongoing challenges are, and survey the many student projects that go beyond the plants. 🌱&nbsp; We will be walking through thick vegetation, narrow paths, and uneven ground. &nbsp;People should have sturdy shoes, bug spray for ticks, and consider wearing long pants and a hat. Bring water! We will be outside for 30-45 minutes and inside the rest of the time.

Join fellow Roanoke Region Wild Ones members for a guided walk at Fishburn Park, focused on identifying native trees and shrubs 🌳. We&rsquo;ll look closely at leaves, bark, and seasonal features to help you recognize species in your own yard and neighborhood. The property has shady gardens, sunny shrub borders, a hazelnut grove, and a mixed fruit and shrub hedgerow. Habitat features include creative uses for woody debris, water features, insect habitat, and bird boxes.
