Sea Otter Savvy is a women-led, scientist-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the only organization in the world solely dedicated to reducing human-caused disturbance to sea otters. Over ten years, our team has built the largest long-term sea otter disturbance dataset, comprising over 100,000 observations across 1,700+ research hours, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Wildlife Management. Our research established the first science-based safe approach distance for sea otters and is actively shaping reintroduction planning in Oregon.SOS operates a year-round community science program with 25+ active volunteers, certifies coastal businesses through our Community Active Wildlife Stewards (CAWS) program, delivers K-12 classroom and field education across three California counties, and facilitates conversations with fishing communities and tribal members on coexistence. Our work has been featured in National Geographic, Netflix's Great National Parks, and PBS's Changing Seas. We represent southern sea otter conservation at international conferences including the Society for Marine Mammalogy Biennial Conference and the Seattle Aquarium Sea Otter Conservation Workshop, and co-facilitate Sea Otter Awareness Week, an annual nationwide campaign reaching thousands each September alongside Defenders of Wildlife, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, California State Parks, and the Elakha Alliance.Powered by a small, dedicated team and a passionate network of volunteers, every dollar goes directly toward protecting sea otters and the ecosystems they call home.
