Every winter, hundreds of our neighbors sleep on the streets of New York City with nowhere warm to go.St. Mary & St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church runs HUTS — Heat Up The Streets — our ongoing ministry that brings care packages of toiletries, snacks, socks, beanies, and gloves directly to homeless New Yorkers. This year, we’re expanding HUTS with a dedicated Coat Drive.In past years, we’ve collected coats as we went. This year, we’re doing it differently: SMSM NYC is purchasing 100 winter coats in advance, so we know exactly what we’re able to give. We’re inviting our parish and community to sponsor those coats directly, before they even hit the streets.From November through February, we will head out on several distribution nights throughout the season, pairing every sponsored coat with a HUTS care package for someone who needs it. As St. John Chrysostom preached, almsgiving matters most “when the cold is so urgent” — this is that call, lived out on the streets of Manhattan, all winter long.Sponsor a coat.
