The Tappahannock Artists Guild fosters creativity and community through art education, exhibitions, and workshops, empowering individuals to explore their artistic potential and connect with others in the local arts scene.

Art on the Wall is an annual event celebrating the artwork created during TAG&#39;s Tidelands Plein Air festival, which brings artists from around the country to paint the landscapes of Essex County. Artworks are available for sale, so bring your checkbooks (or your Apple Wallet) and take home a gorgeous interpretation of our local area for your walls.&nbsp; The event includes heavy hors d&#39;oeuvres and oysters, drinks, and wonderful company. Many of the artists will be in attendance to answer questions about the work.&nbsp; Your attendance and your support keeps art accessible to everyone in Tappahannock 🤝.

Tidelands Plein Air celebrates our rivers, streets, and working landscapes through outdoor painting. Tidelands Plein Air 2026

Weekly classes for students that value regular instruction, accountability and steady creative momentum. &nbsp; Students will work in their choice of medium, including paint, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink and pencil. &nbsp;Working on independent &nbsp;projects, there will be guidance and individual critiques from the instructor. Sip & Create Design and Create Stencils with Robert Placky

Why did Ukiyo-e prints resonate so profoundly with artists such as James Whistler, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Toulouse-Lautrec? How did images of Edo&rsquo;s &ldquo;floating world&rdquo; inspire Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists to explore all aspects of European culture, including the Parisian demi-monde? Twyla Kitts leads this illustrated adventure exploring the connections between Japanese woodblock prints and the artistic transformations in Western art during the Belle &Eacute;poque. Sunday Series: The Japanese Aesthetic: Floating World to Demi-monde

The Art of Seeing Buildings/Outdoor Drawing Series - Drawing in Perspective

Sip & Create with Feathers

&nbsp;Sip &amp; Create at TAG&nbsp; Join us on Thursday, August 20, from 6:30&ndash;8:00 PM for our monthly Sip &amp; Create event at the Tappahannock Artists Guild! Part journaling and part collaging, Soul Collage requires no art skills. Through this creative and simple process, you&rsquo;ll embark on a path of sacred self-discovery, unearthing whatever might be awaiting your attention beneath the surface. We&rsquo;ll work with magazines, photos, books and other media to gather and assemble visual imagery that speaks to us in a meaningful way. You&rsquo;ll leave with cards you&rsquo;ve created as totems of your inner work. The workshop is led by May-Lily Lee, who has created more than 500 Soul Collages. Six-time regional Emmy award-winner May-Lily Lee has been called &ldquo;Virginia&rsquo;s Storyteller&rdquo; for her more than two decades of distinctive work in Virginia Public Broadcasting. She began her path in journalism by graduating at age 19 from the University of Maryland, where she earned a scholarship as a Maryland Distinguished Scholar. She is a prominent figure in the fields of television and radio, particularly in the state of Virginia.&nbsp; Ms. Lee was Host/Senior Producer of Virginia Currents, Host of the academic quiz show Battle of the Brains, and Host/Producer of a number of other weekly series including Capitol Events, Virginia Legislature: The Week, and Women&rsquo;s Forum, in addition to documentary and live specials. She&rsquo;s also moderated and paneled a number of Virginia&rsquo;s gubernatorial and statewide debates. Following her work on Virginia Public Television, Ms. Lee moved to Virginia Public Radio in Roanoke where for two years she hosted the weekly statewide talk show Virginia Conversations. For her pursuit of excellence in broadcasting, she was inducted into the prestigious Silver Circle of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NATAS-Chesapeake Bay region) whose honorees represent hallmarks of broadcasting through their excellence and innovation. Sip & Create 6" x 6" panels

Explore the basics of abstract art in a relaxed, hands-on session 🎨. In this introductory workshop, you&rsquo;ll experiment with color, shape, and texture to create your own abstract piece, with gentle guidance from VMFA instructor Leigh Anne Chambers. This course is an introduction to creating an abstract painting from loose sketches in paint on watercolor paper, then mounting the paper on panel. Students will create a variety of sketches in paint derived or influenced by at least one object from nature. The sketches will be in acrylic on watercolor paper incorporating different techniques that range from pouring paint to making prints to including their own personal style. There will be an informal critique where the student will consider which sketch to finish and then mount with gel medium on a 12&rdquo; x 12&rdquo; wood panel to create a finished painting.&nbsp; No prior experience needed&mdash;just curiosity. Sip & Create Patriotic Painting on Slate

Discover the basics of drawing with colored pencils in a relaxed, small-group class with instructor Donald Johnson. 3-week class. Sign up for one, two, or all three sessions. Learn how to choose materials, blend colors, build layers, and add simple shading to make your sketches come alive. Goal: Build foundational techniques for using colored pencils, graphite, and ink to acquire the skills needed to create a small drawing using a photographic reference. 1st Class: This class &nbsp;will start with an introduction to supplies and demonstration of basic handling of the material and techniques; such as shading, hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending. Participants will &nbsp;complete drawing exercises to experiment with the materials and create foundation drawings (sketches) from a reference photograph or object in preparation for their final drawing.&nbsp; 2nd Class: This class will focus on creating depth in their drawings through the use of perspective, tone, and value. &nbsp;Participants will complete black and white drawings in preparation for their final drawings. &nbsp;Students will be encouraged to bring in an object(s) or photograph for reference. 3rd Class: There will be a class demonstration of colored pencil techniques (blending, layering, and shading). &nbsp; Participants will combine skills from the previous classes to create a final drawing using colored pencils, graphite, and ink. Intro to Drawing with Colored Pencils

Slow down, breathe deeply, and let your pen wander. Join us for a relaxing and creative class in meditative doodling using black-and-white ink on 6 x 6 watercolor paper. Through simple patterns, lines, and shapes, you&rsquo;ll discover how mindful drawing can quiet the mind, reduce stress, and spark creativity &mdash; no artistic experience required. As we look back on another creative and meaningful year at Tappahannock Art Guild, TAG, we are filled with gratitude&mdash;for you, our friends, artists, and art lovers who make everything we do possible. This year, our gallery walls came alive with the work of local artists, from established professionals to first-time exhibitors. We hosted workshops that sparked new skills and friendships, youth art programs that nurtured the next generation of creators, and community plein air events that brought art out into the heart of Tappahannock. Your generosity sustains that spirit. When you give to TAG, you directly support art education, exhibitions, and the creative energy that helps our town thrive.As we plan for the year ahead, we are excited to further expand our educational outreach. We will have the return of TAG&rsquo;s Summer Art Camp, and free KidzArt activities during farmer&rsquo;s markets. We&rsquo;ve been working with area art teachers to offer recertification and teaching opportunities. One of our goals is to enlarge and upgrade our gallery with dedicated workshop and studio space, bringing in more people from Essex and surrounding counties to more programs throughout the year. With increased space we hope to offer more youth art classes. We will continue to host the Tidelands Plein Air event in October, which brings artists from around the country to celebrate our town on canvas. But we can only fulfill these visions with your help. As we look back on another creative and meaningful year at Tappahannock Art Guild, TAG, we are filled with gratitude—for you, our friends, artists, and art lovers who make everything we do possible.This year, our gallery walls came alive with the work of local artists, from established professionals to first-time exhibitors. We hosted workshops that sparked new skills and friendships, youth art programs that nurtured the next generation of creators, and community plein air events that brought art out into the heart of Tappahannock.Your generosity sustains that spirit. When you give to TAG, you directly support art education, exhibitions, and the creative energy that helps our town thrive.As we plan for the year ahead, we are excited to further expand our educational outreach. We will have the return of TAG’s Summer Art Camp, and free KidzArt activities during farmer’s markets. We’ve been working with area art teachers to offer recertification and teaching opportunities.One of our goals is to enlarge and upgrade our gallery with dedicated workshop and studio space, bringing in more people from Essex and surrounding counties to more programs throughout the year. With increased space we hope to offer more youth art classes.We will continue to host the Tidelands Plein Air event in October, which brings artists from around the country to celebrate our town on canvas. This informal talk offers a close look at how one working artist approaches materials, form, and daily studio life. Hosted by Tappahannock Artists Guild, this event supports our mission to promote artists and their work and to offer art education and cultural enrichment to citizens and visitors. Apply to be a vendor at TAG&rsquo;s 2026 Holiday Market 🎨🎄 Share your work with a community that values local art, creative expression, and diverse traditions. This application helps us learn about your artwork, handmade goods, and display needs. The TAG Holiday Pop-Up Market is a juried pop-up shop that will feature handmade works by artists and artisans from the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions. We will feature hand made jewelry, home decor, accessories, toys, and anything small and gifty and creative. Our jurors will select the vendors that best match with the TAG aesthetic. Most products should be priced below $100 if possible. Applications are due by midnight on November 1, 2026.&nbsp; We will notify those accepted by November 9, 2026. Accepted artists will need to deliver their wares to TAG and set up their displays on Saturday, November 21 between noon and 6pm. Each artist will have a space approximately 14&rdquo;x28&rdquo; on a table top or shelf for display. We will have limited space to store inventory, so we may call on you to restock as things sell.&nbsp; Because TAG will be staffing the sale, promoting the sale, and maintaining the shop space, there will be a $25 vendor fee to participate, and TAG will take a 30% commission on sales. Checks will be issued by December 30, 2025. The shop will open on Friday, November 27th at noon, and will be open Thursdays through Saturdays, noon to 6pm, until December 19. When the sale ends on December 19 at 6pm, vendors must remove unsold items. TAG&rsquo;s mission is to promote artists and offer art education and cultural enrichment to citizens and visitors. Create a fresh winter centerpiece with TAG Guild Member Barbara Woodward in this hands-on workshop. You&rsquo;ll work step by step to build your own arrangement to take home and enjoy. ❄️ Use fresh greens to create a centerpiece. &nbsp;Bring your own or use fresh greens supplied by instructor. We will provide the materials for assembling the centerpiece, including ribbons. This Tappahannock Artists Guild event supports our mission to offer art education, cultural enrichment, and creative expression for our community. All skill levels are welcome&mdash;materials and guidance are provided. 🌿

Winter Centerpiece Workshop with Barbara Woodward

Explore classic techniques while growing your own style.In Drawing with the Masters, you&rsquo;ll study works by renowned artists and learn how to draw or improve your drawing following the classical methodology of drawing from life. &nbsp;This is the methodology that was taught for generations and formed most of the great artists. &nbsp;Line, form, tonal work and shading, timed (&ldquo;gesture&rdquo;) drawing, perspective, contrast, and proportion are among the elements of drawing that will be discussed, demonstrated and practiced. &nbsp; We will begin with simple objects and progress to more complex ones. &nbsp;There will be ongoing individual review of each student&rsquo;s progress. &nbsp;The goal of this process is &ldquo;learning how to see&rdquo; the essence of your subject matter and render it convincingly and confidently. &nbsp;Skills learned may be applied to any subject the artist may wish to develop proficiency in drawing. &nbsp; Drawing is the traditional foundation of artistic progress in other artistic disciplines such as painting and sculpture. &nbsp;The instructor has seen students with basic drawing skills advance and has been especially delighted to have many students who said they &quot;couldn&#39;t draw a straight line&quot; produce drawings of a quality that they never thought possible!
