The Broadway Legacy Foundation

The Broadway Legacy Foundation preserves and promotes the legacy of Broadway by supporting educational programs, fostering creativity, and providing resources for future generations of artists, ensuring the vibrancy of musical theater continues.

Co-Hosted by author and fashion designer Jeffrey Banks and founder of Project 1 Voice Erich McMillan-McCall. Broadway According To... is a conversation series that explores the golden era of Broadway through the voices of the people who lived and loved it. Each episode invites actors, writers, musicians, designers, and aficionados to share personal memories, behind-the-scenes stories, and firsthand perspectives on the shows, culture, an moments that defined that transformative period. It&#39;s an oral history style look at how Broadway shaped and was shaped b it&#39;s own artists and audiences.

Al Hirschfeld drew his first Sondheim show in 1957 when Sondheim wrote the lyrics to West Side Story. Hirschfeld had been drawing the American Theatre for more than thirty years at that point. Yet he would go on and record the next half century of Sondheim on Broadway, off-Broadway, and in films. Join Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold as he takes a tour through Sondheim&rsquo;s career as seen by Hirschfeld and reveals stories behind the lines of the drawings, along with sharing images from the Hirschfeld archives. All of Sondheim&rsquo;s best-known works will be featured &mdash; West Side Story, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, and Sunday in the Park with George &mdash; art drawn from life before the opening night of each of Sondheim&rsquo;s productions. &nbsp;&ldquo;It&rsquo;s hard to imagine twentieth century Broadway without either Hirschfeld or Sondheim,&rdquo; says Leopold. &ldquo;Both men admired each other&rsquo;s work, and both loved the theater, their legacies strengthened by remaining a presence on the Great White Way with two Broadway houses named in their honor.&rdquo; Leopold recently authored Hirschfeld&rsquo;s Sondheim (Abrams Comic Arts), a deluxe oversized 11&times;14-inch &ldquo;poster&rdquo; book in which 25 full page images can be easily removed and put right on a wall. A book signing will take place after the talk.&nbsp;
