The Humane Bean

The Humane Bean rescues and rehabilitates community cats, providing essential veterinary care and fostering them for a better life. Our mission is to ensure every cat has a safe, healthy, and loving environment, free from the dangers of outdoor living.

10/12/2026Creek was brought to a local animal hospital by a good samaritan with a dangerously low red blood cell count due to flea anemia. Creek's flea burden was so overwhelming that he was nearly out of blood entirely. He was comatose and cold with white gums. A normal PCV (packed cell volume) for a cat is 30-40%, Creek's was 8%. Warming efforts began and a blood donation was collected from a volunteer's pet, River, who is the reason for Creek's name. Over a 4-hour period, Creek laid motionless receiving blood through an IV. Slowly, his temperature rose, his color started to return, and finally his head popped up to take slow bites of a squeeze up treat with grateful purrs in between. Once he was stable, Creek was given two flea baths. The water coming off him looked like wine. The poor guy was being eaten alive! Creek tested negative for FIV/FeLV/panleukopenia and was given flea/tick medication along with dewormer. Creek bounced back after hospitalization, despite an upper respiratory infection. On October 12, Creek saw our friends at CoTwins Veterinary Care to get a complete blood count and a chemistry panel to check his reticulocytes and liver/kidney values. This cost $204. We are waiting on results to determine what our course of action for Creek will be. Any underlying diseases will be treated, and he will begin a course of antibiotics to treat his upper respiratory infection. Once Creek is deemed healthy enough, he will be neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, then listed for adoption. He is estimated to be between 6 and 7 years old. Donate to help us give Creek the best shot at a healthy rest of his life! Thank you for your support! 10/13/2026Bloodwork collected yesterday shows Creek's PCV is back down at 8.9%. He is still up and alert, eating, and drinking. With this low of a red blood cell count, Creek's body is not oxygenating properly and he will eventually decline to the point he was again. The good news is, Creek's body is producing new red blood cells (reticulocytes) rapidly to replace the loss. This is a good sign, however, these cells take 3 weeks to fully mature and do their job. Creek needs another transfusion to survive these next 3 weeks. After his next transfusion, we hope to do a PCR test to determine the reason his body is eating up red blood cells so quickly. He will also get repeat bloodwork. Creek is on Prednisolone twice a day and Doxycycline once a day. Our goal for his transfusion is $1000. Thank you for supporting our effort to save Creek! 10/19/2026Creek had recheck bloodwork today and his PCV is up to 26%! The normal range is between 30%-40%, and we are almost there! Creek is still on his medications and has a steady fever, as his body is working overtime to heal. We will have all his receipts to date posted below.
