Tucson Spellers

Tucson Spellers empowers nonspeaking autistic individuals through community, communication, and creativity. We provide inclusive programs, workshops, and events that foster belonging, independence, and personal growth for Spellers of all ages.

Tucson Spellers is excited to form a&nbsp;team for the Race for Communication, supporting the important work of the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC). This race raises funds to help promote inclusion and empowerment for nonspeakers who experience sensory-motor differences such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other communication barriers. Since the official race takes place in Virginia,&nbsp;Tucson Spellers will participate as a virtual team, and this event will take the place of our&nbsp;Hiking Club for the month. We will gather locally and complete our race together at&nbsp;Agua Caliente Park, a beautiful and mostly accessible park that allows everyone to participate in a way that works best for them. All Tucson Spellers&mdash;spellers, families, friends, and supporters&mdash;are encouraged to join us. You can participate for any distance or length of time that feels comfortable. Whether you walk a little, complete a mile, or simply come cheer others on, the goal is to move together in support of communication access for all.

Race for Communication

Join Tucson Spellers for a special afternoon of poetry, creativity, and community as we gather in the beautiful outdoor amphitheater at Sanctuary Cove. This event will celebrate the powerful voices and creative writing of our spellers as they share their original poems and written works in a supportive and welcoming setting. During the reading, spellers will have the opportunity to share their creative writing in a way that feels most meaningful to them. Their pieces may be read aloud by a&nbsp;voice of their choosing&nbsp;or presented by our&nbsp;featured guest reader, allowing each writer&rsquo;s words and ideas to be heard and celebrated by the community. This gathering is a chance to experience the depth, insight, and artistry that emerges when nonspeakers are given access to communication. We invite friends, families, and community members to come listen, connect, and support these incredible writers as their words are brought to life. Come enjoy an inspiring evening of poetry, connection, and the powerful voices of Tucson Spellers in one of Tucson&rsquo;s most peaceful desert settings.

Join us for this month&rsquo;s Tucson Spellers Hiking Club as we enjoy a relaxed walk together at Fort Lowell Park. We will follow the well-maintained bike and hiking path that runs alongside the Pantano Wash, offering an easy and accessible route for our group. This outing is all about fresh air, movement, and sharing time with friends while connecting with our Tucson Spellers community. We look forward to spending a beautiful morning outdoors together! The Tucson Spellers Hiking Club is a fantastic way to connect with fellow spellers while exploring the breathtaking outdoor scenery of Tucson. With its stunning landscapes, fresh air, and beautiful weather, Tucson offers the perfect backdrop for group hikes. Each hike will vary in location and difficulty, providing opportunities for everyone to enjoy the outdoors at their own pace. Whether you&#39;re looking for a casual stroll or a more challenging trek, this club is a great way to build friendships, stay active, and experience the natural beauty of the desert together!

Spellers Take the Field: Spring Training Community Day&nbsp;is a collaborative event hosted by&nbsp;TEVA Community,&nbsp;Tucson Spellers, and&nbsp;Spellers Cove, created to bring spellers from across the region together for an afternoon of connection, community, and baseball. On Saturday, March 14, we&rsquo;ll gather for the&nbsp;Seattle Mariners&nbsp;vs.&nbsp;Los Angeles Angels&nbsp;Spring Training game at&nbsp;Tempe Diablo Stadium, with game start time at 1:10 PM. Tickets for this event are being generously reduced thanks to TEVA Community, making this a more accessible opportunity for our community to attend together. Our group will be seated down the first base line in right field, with a covered pavilion and picnic benches just behind the section to allow anyone to step away for space as needed. In addition, Tucson Spellers will provide every speller with a $10 food and snack voucher to enjoy at the stadium. This event is designed with inclusion, comfort, and connection at the center&mdash;creating a shared experience where spellers, families, and supporters can relax, cheer, and enjoy time together.

⚾🌵 Spellers Take the Field: Spring Training Community Day 🌵⚾

Tucson Spellers invites you to Spellers in the Sonoran Desert on Saturday, February 28 at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. We will meet at 9:30 AM to allow ample time to explore together and return for the free flight raptor show for those interested; if you arrive later, we will connect you with the group. Tucson Spellers is helping make this outing accessible by covering the cost of the stingray feeding experience for spellers and subsidizing tickets, with pricing at $10 for a Speller and Support Person and $8.95 for each additional ticket (regular price $29.95). &nbsp;Participants are welcome to bring lunch or snacks, and meals are also available for purchase on site.

Building Bridges: Rethinking Apraxia, Movement & Communication

Join us for a transformative art series led by&nbsp;acclaimed artist Matthew Palmo (<a fr-original-style="" href="http://www.palmoart.com/" style="text-decoration-color: initial; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">www.palmoart.com</a>)(<a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.indicatorart.org/" style="text-decoration-color: initial; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">https://www.indicatorart.org</a>) .&nbsp; This inclusive experience is designed for artists of all abilities to create an original abstract painting using an intuitive, individualized approach.This is not a traditional art class.&nbsp; Each participant will work independently on a unique piece, supported by Matthew&rsquo;s one-on-one guidance, for two Saturdays, August 9th AND&nbsp;August 16th. No two paintings will be the same. The process honors each artist&rsquo;s voice and style, emphasizing that limitations can become strengths in the creative process. A third session will include an online art critique by professional artists. Date and time to be announced. This three-day art experience is valued at $114, a prorated portion of the typical $190 program&mdash;Tucson Spellers is covering that cost, with just a $20 contribution requested to help cover supplies. This experience is open to Spellers of all artistic backgrounds and is designed to be fully accessible and empowering.&nbsp;

3-PART ABSTRACT ART EXPERIENCE WITH MATTHEW PALMO

Join us for an exciting 2-hour rock climbing adventure at Rock Solid Indoor Climbing Gym, generously co-hosted by TEVA! This is a wonderful opportunity to challenge your body, engage your brain, and experience the thrill of climbing in a safe and supportive environment alongside friends. Participants will begin with a safety orientation led by Rock Solid&rsquo;s professional and highly trained staff. Climbers will then take turns roping up and scaling the walls, with staff providing individual attention, support, and guidance every step of the way. Rock climbing is a fantastic full-body activity that promotes strength, coordination, focus, and confidence&mdash;all while having fun! Snacks and water will be provided to keep everyone fueled and hydrated throughout the event. Participants are also welcome to bring their own snacks or regulation tools as needed.&nbsp; Requirements:&nbsp;1. Each participant will be required to wear a harness and rock climbing shoes (gear will be provided). If the shoes are too challenging, participants MUST bring freshly washed closed-toed shoes.&nbsp;2. Each participant must have a helper present to provide any assistance or encouragement as needed (helpers are not required to climb).&nbsp;3. Each participant must have a signed waiver on file (waivers to be distributed upon sign-up)&nbsp; We can&rsquo;t wait to see you there for this unique chance to try something new, build skills, and connect with friends in a safe and welcoming setting!

Tucson Spellers Poetry Anthology

Tucson Spellers is excited to announce our Summer Extension Course, a weekly community-based class designed to continue building communication, regulation, and purposeful movement introduced in the Tucson Spellers Communication and Regulation Partner (CRP) Support and Skill Building Workshop. This course provides spellers and their non-parent Communication and Regulation Partners (CRPs) with an opportunity to strengthen spelling skills while participating in engaging, structured activities in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Join Tucson Spellers for our free Communication and Regulation Partner Support and Skill Building Workshop, beginning September 11 at Liberty Center for Language and Learning. Led by S2C Practitioners Jade Munsey and Courtney Cameron, this workshop provides guided coaching, hands on practice, and direct feedback to help spellers and their CRPs strengthen communication, regulation, and co-regulation skills. Each workshop is limited to four spellers. Every speller must attend with a non-parental CRP and bring their own letterboards. Limited loaner boards are available.
