The Steinbeck House in Salinas California, a Queen Anne Victorian home, is the birthplace and childhood home of John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, East of Eden, Cannery Row, and more! Since 1973, The Steinbeck House has operated as a 501c-3 nonprofit by The Valley Guild, solely for the maintenance and accessibility of the home to the readers of the world.The Steinbeck House welcomes guests from near and far to experience history and community through our nonprofit restaurant, gift shop and bookstore, tours, special events, and community programs. In the past five years, it has hosted visitors from 68 countries and all 50 states. Our guests tell us of reading Steinbeck’s works in their native languages and of their efforts to visit his childhood home in Salinas. The House is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Valley Guild and the Steinbeck House invite you to support our first annual classic and vintage car show fundraising event, East of Eden & Engines. This free community event celebrates classic and vintage cars, community, and the literary legacy of John Steinbeck. All proceeds from this event directly supports the preservation and ongoing operations of the Steinbeck House. Held at Heritage Park (formerly Salinas Intermodal Transit Center), this family-friendly event will feature community partners, fun activities for children, delicious food prepared by the Steinbeck House and other local food vendors, car rides, live music and performances, a silent auction and more! What Will Your Contribution Support?Since 1974, the Valley Guild has preserved and operated the historic Steinbeck House, welcoming more than 30,000 visitors annually. For over 50 years, we have welcomed guests from near and far to experience culture, education, and local history through our nonprofit restaurant, guided tours, gift shop and bookstore, community programs, and special events. Your contribution helps us:Provide free guided tours: More than 300 visitors in 2026 have enjoyed our free guided tours in 2026 so far.Support local schools and nonprofit organizations: Provide complimentary lunches and other charitable support for local schools and nonprofits. This year alone, we have donated 20 complimentary lunches for two, valued at $120 each.Create meaningful volunteer and work experience opportunities: Offer opportunities for seniors, teens, and college students.We work closely with Workforce Monterey County to offer career internship opportunities, along with hands-on experience through our high school Junior Server Program.Support community health and wellness: Offer a plant-based options in alignment with Live Well initiatives.Strengthen our local economy and community: Contribute to economic development as a local tourist attraction while building a stronger community through our programs, events, and partnerships with local organizations and businesses.Your contribution will help us expand our educational programs, grow our impact among local residents and visitors, preserve this historic landmark, and carry John Steinbeck’s legacy forward for future generations to enjoy.We would be honored to have your support for this community event, and for you to join us on Sunday, October 18th from 10:30am to 3:00pm at Heritage Park (Salinas Intermodal Transit Center).Thank you for your generous contribution and believing in our mission.
