Help Jacob &ldquo;Kai&rdquo; Freytes&rsquo; Family Relocate &amp; Rebuild You might assume there is a government program that steps in when the family of a murdered child needs emergency relocation. There isn&rsquo;t. That is why the Victims Rights Reform Council (VRRC) is asking for your help.A 12-year-old was murdered. His mother is trying to protect her surviving children. The relocation assistance most people assume exists for crime victims simply isn&rsquo;t there. Twelve-year-old Jacob &ldquo;Kai&rdquo; Freytes rode his bicycle to a Bronx bodega to get a ball.He never made it home.Jacob was struck by a stray bullet during a gunfight and killed. His mother, Migdalia Martinez, is now living every parent&rsquo;s worst nightmare while trying to do what any mother would do after losing a child to violence: protect the children she still has.Migdalia wants to relocate her family away from the area where her son was killed and somewhere she believes her surviving children can feel safe. A mother shouldn&rsquo;t have to choose between a paycheck and protecting her children Migdalia says she was advised to take family leave while seeking assistance.She did.She now has three children to support without her regular paycheck &mdash; only to subsequently be told that because her leave was temporary, she still did not qualify for the assistance she was seeking.Meanwhile, New York spends enormous sums on homelessness, emergency shelter and programs designed to prevent gun violence.The state announced nearly $21 million for SNUG Street Outreach, funding outreach workers, social workers, case managers and other services in communities affected by gun violence.New York City has also extended an emergency hotel contract worth up to $1.86 billion over three years to maintain shelter capacity.Yet when the mother of a murdered 12-year-old says, &ldquo;I need to get my surviving children somewhere safe,&rdquo; there is no simple relocation program waiting for her.
