Around the world, women and children walk an average of 6K a day (just under 4 miles) to fetch water for their basic needs. Because they must spend hours each day involved in this tedious task, many children (especially girls) do not have the opportunity to attend school. Many women do not have the opportunity to work outside their homes and earn money to care for themselves and their children.
Since its founding in 2006 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia, and with the support of many of the congregations of Sisters of Saint Joseph from across the US Federation, Change for Global Change has been helping people around the world gain access to clean water. With small grants of $5000 or less, we have sponsored 83 sustainable projects that have provided rain water cisterns, bore holes, wells, irrigation systems, pond dredging and restoration, and more in 15 different countries. Access to clean water has not only improved health and sanitation at our project sites, but it has had major impacts on education, the environment, and gender equality, allowing girls to go to school and women to earn income.
Our walkathon theme, "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes," invites participants to walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who must walk miles every day to fetch water. As a donor, you can rest assured that your donation will go directly to funding grants that will provide access to clean water for those most in need. Since we are a 100% volunteer organization with very little overhead costs, 99% of every donation goes to project funding. Please be as generous as you can!
